You make it sound like some dark plot. If he isnt one of the 2 final candidates that the Tory MPs end up with, then the wider party cant vote for him.

He has plenty of enemies/opponents in the MP ranks.

It would also defy precendent - the early favourite in a Tory run-off almost never wins.

There will be a lot of nervous heads in Brussels. They should have blagged the utterly useless May into an Implementation Period and crushed our negotiators with their vastly better counterparts. Now they have to reset at a time of upheaval (European elections).

Good point that. No one actually has a clue what the landscape will look like next week. It could be 27 Nigel Farages all violently agreeing with each other for all we know!

I must be moving in the wrong circles. I don't know anyone - not one person - who wants Boris to be PM. Everyone is fed up with his buffoonish carry-on.

Is there anyone north of Watford who has a good word to say for him?

You will be surprised just how popular Boris is. He will be the next PM......

...Rory Stewart is the one.

That is who it should be, but of course having done something is about 0.1% as important as being in the little club of people who think they have the right to run the country. Stewart's been kept at arms length ever since he became an MP (he was first elected at the same time as Rudd, Raab, Hancock and Javid, all of whom have got further than he did despite being demonstrably worse).

I pray the Tories make that error in allowing his name to go forward to the membership to vote in. He really would be a calamity at the polls. He's loved by about 90,000 Tory Party members but, as you say, the country will give him a wide berth.

Sadly, the Tory Party will ensure he never gets to the final two.

....which is exactly why having MPs select the candidates is the way to avoid extremists taking over the party.
