The 'Left Wide Forward' Position

Slightly different position now than the traditional left winger...the media call it a wide forward.

Bit confused here...

1 -- Henry was a winger and moved to centre forward

2 -- Who is playing 'wingers upfront' ?

3-- Wingers are exactly known to play both sides...e.g Overmars, Giggs, Kanchelskis wouldnt switch over often if at all during games?

4-- Were not playing with wingers in the traditional sense.

5-- Walcott said he wanted to play CF...then after that failed he wanted RW...last season he played and said he wanted to play left side so he could cut inside

You can’t really say we’re not playing with traditional wingers and then make your argument based solely on 90s traditional wingers...

Ultimately, a lot of successful attacking teams in the modern game have players across those 3/4 positions that can interchange and I believe that’s what we’ll look to do; seems odd to buy such young, mobile options and then pigeonhole them into only playing left/right.

Once all options are fit and firing, I anticipate Tosun being a target man CF, with 3 interchangeable attackers behind him. If one or both of the wide players are having no joy against their full-backs, they should be encouraged to switch intuitively to suit the game.

Thierry Henry says “hello”

Thierry Henry successfully switching to a striker doesn't mean it would work for any other pacy winger. Walcott's been tried there a few times throughout his career with at best mixed results.

Lets use a hypothetical and say the brazilians click instantly with Richarlison left and Bernard central...Walcott missee a game, its not ideal to move bernard over + lookman isnt great there...

What do we do?

I've not seen enough of Bernard to know whether he could do a job on the right but it not being ideal isn't a reason not to do it when needed. Sometimes you just have to adapt and make do with what you have - Fabian Delph playing LB for Citeh springs to mind.

We're two competitive games into Silva's reign so I'm pretty sure we haven't seen every single game plan he has and maybe there'll be tweaks to the system or shape dependent on what's available to him. Having a bit of competition for preferred positions is no bad thing.

Wide forward players/wingers should nowadays be able to switch flanks and operate on both sides, and be able to change during the game. City do this most games to give opposing defenders something new to think about. Therefore I would have no worries at all about ours being mostly from a leftist persuasion.

Walcott plays on the right.

Lookman will be gone soon.

Onyekuru will never play for us.

That leaves just the 2 and the way I see it Bernard can play in various positions.
So really Richarlison will be the only regular left sider whilst he's available.

Anyway at 1 point on Saturday Walcott and Rico switched wings, im almost certain that Rico and Walcott will even come central at times.

But I never see a game when either will start as a number 9 personally.

But hey, what do I know, just EVERYTHING.
