Last word I'll have on subject of context being important anyway.

Here's Rush Hour. In this scene, Jackie Chan has seen Chris Tucker - a black man - use the phrase repeatedly to other black people, but he's foreign and has no context for the meaning other than it's a form of greeting.

Hence, when left alone in a bar, he does this.

Now, that's a non-black person using the word in a comedy, for comic effect to highlight the importance of context.

Should Rush Hour be removed from every streaming service and basically shamed and erased from history as a result? Or are we sensible enough to understand - just like Blazing Saddles, just like Fawlty Towers - that the underlying context for the joke means the creators and the scenes themselves understand and respect the history and impact of the word and are simply making social commentary on it for the purpose of entertainment.

With the statues, it's a similar thing where you have to understand the context of why they exist. As GOT says, you have to draw a line somewhere, otherwise everything is offensive or nothing is offensive. To highlight context isn't to be against the aims of BLM - it's more to say you have to have a clearly defined aim. Pulling down statues and erasing TV shows, in my eyes, does absolutely nothing to advance the cause, which is supposed to be equality. In many ways it's picking the lowest hanging fruit.

BLM haven’t asked for fawlty towers to be removed.

No one has, other than some very questionable twitter accounts.

It shouldn’t even be a debate. It should be completely ignored. If people really care about the movement they wouldn’t give this nonsense further traction.

TBF the big problem here is that the debate is clearly being pushed in a direction we should not want to be going in. Look at the words of that tweet for example, which clearly imply BLM involvement in the damage.

Hope you realise that BLM probably had no involvement in this.

The BBC need to have a word trying to tie them to that.

Just a coincidence I'm sure...

In short ladies and gents, vandalism is not an acceptable form of protest. If you think it is, before checking your privilege, check your morals.

Believing it would be isolated to very specific statues and wouldn't lead to indiscriminate acts of violence and wider vandalism is short sighted at best.

Enjoy the weekend.

But they did target statues mate, and at the time it was said it was ridiculous and where does the line get drawn.

Because BLM didn't back off from the association, their message got tarnished and it allowed the ridiculous to get more ridiculous.

So now I fully agree with you - BLM as a movement isn't calling for all this, but they set themselves up for being responsible for it happening. Its all about cause and effect.

It’s absolutely been done to stir things up, but I’d point to the lack of interest / complaints about Penny Lane locally or nationally during these demos as meaning it probably wasn’t anything to do with them.

So what should they do, not protest incase a fringe minority take it the wrong way?

That always happens with any movement and cause.

Lets hope the good people of Liverpool decide to stand up against any further Authoritarian thuggery during these BLM protests tomorrow.

People need to protect democracy and freedom of speech at all costs - dont let the censorship tyrants win.

I hope they don't and indeed they don't need to.

All any further protest and violence now benefits the opposing view anyway. If you're Tommy Robinson, you're praying the BLM affiliated thugs that have subverted it keep on rioting for months as it's a goldmine for them to dig from in the long term.

And must admit that's the first post from you I'd say is outright disappointing, as its very much far right in tone.

The BLM movement has been hijacked by a small number of opportunist thugs who'll hide by the name as they know any opposition will be met with "U AGAINST BLACK LIVES MATTER DEN M8???"

I have no problem with peaceful protests (albeit not in a global pandemic) however I'll be dissapointed if the silent majority continue to raise no objection in these thugs attacking innocent people and destroying whatever they deem fit.

The police are largely politically hamstrung due to the George Floyd murder therefore who else can stop the lunatics from running the asylum?

Think we probably agree mostly on this.

We also have a responsibility to ignore the nonsense and get back to the matter in hand though.

BLM really need a spokesperson so they don’t continue to be associated with some of the rubbish that’s happening.
