I don’t think anyone doesn’t want change to happen quicker, but that may not be realistic. The unfortunate reality is that by the time someone is a grown adult, it’s pretty unlikely they are going to unlearn racism if it’s been a part of their life as long as they can remember. It’s all about reaching younger people who don’t already have those viewpoints ingrained in them, and making sure they aren’t ever allowed to take hold. But the truth is, that just takes time.
I agree that on an individual basis viewpoints become ingrained and they won’t unlearn racism but society can unlearn racist actions/comments and this can be brought about by more radical quicker changes

Absolutely spot on.

It's clear as day that racism in society has declined. This was 50+ years ago and it's unthinkable now.

I think the conditions this past summer amounted to a perfect storm that we aren’t likely to see replicated in our lifetimes. Here in the US we had a string of several incidents of police brutality against African Americans in quick succession set against the backdrop of a global pandemic that was also disproportionately affecting minorities and at a time when everyone had been couped up in their homes for weeks, many out of work, and had nothing else to distract their attention. It’s no surprise that things got out of hand.

Completely agreed again.

You won't catch me saying the initial protests weren't 100% justified. They were.

As you say, things have got out of hand. More harm now being done than good. I'm not saying "put the genie back in the bottle", I'm saying refine the message - footballers kneeling in support of a extreme political ideology (whether they like it or not, that's what the perception is) antagonises and dilutes the message and nulls progress.

It antagonises some sad sack racists at Millwall and elsewhere it doesn’t null progress.
Plenty of people got upset with Rock against Racism, black rights protests in the U.K. and the US, gay rights protests. They won because they fought and were right. All of these had political arms because everything is political. Absolute nonsense to suggest they’re harming black lives or progress of equality in the U.K. but hey, they should be happy that things aren’t as bad as the past and keep their heads down a bit, hey.

What annoyed me with the protests in the UK was that for a lot of the protesters it was largely down to boredom of being 2-3 months into a lockdown rather than actual outrage.

Some 18 yr old middle class white uni student from the suburbs smashing windows and knocking down historical statues because a black man was murdered by racist cops in a country on the other side of the world - Ok makes sense to me.

Dont get me started on the burning of flags on the cenotaph.

Those actions whilst by a minority turned many away from BLM myself included.

I'll support any and all calls for equality but not when you have a lunatic fringe causing anarchy.

Poorly worded poll that actually proves very little.

If you said to someone in the pub who get blaming Asians for the world's problems that they were a bell then there are going to be some heightened racial tensions. It's still only the fault of the racist bell though.

And again, if people want to get riled up by it, they can, but they aren't going to stop progress and people challenging the status quo.

So you now are against equality because you don’t like that white middle class 18 year olds acted like fools?
