Current Affairs The Labour Party

They're probably quite united on economic issues, but seem massively divided on social issues, with city dwelling Labour supporters being quite liberal on such things, and those from smaller towns being much more conservative. Heck of a job to reconcile those two things.

Probably easier than you think. If we can unite around what we all share, then I see no reason why we can't be an effective opposition - or government going forward. People seem to forget the issues Clement Atlee had in his post-war government with both wings of the party trying to tear each-other apart from within. That was a fairly successful stint in Number 10, from what I've been told(!)

"Because Ed was such a dork".

You couldn't make this up.

One of the main reasons why HRC was so toxic and why Trump got elected was because of her 'vested interests' with big business. The "right" Miliband made £75,000 for 15 days work a year at Sunderland, Global Arc paid him £14,000 for a single speech. VantagePoint paid him £100,000 for four days work consulting.

I mean come off it mate.

I was being flippant, mate. Have a cup of tea or something.

It's a quandry, as you've got UKIP seeming to offer themselves up for those social conservatives, and the Lib Dems offering themselves up for the social liberals. Interesting times.

The same "Liberal" Democrats that attacked Peter Tatchell on the basis of his sexual orientation in the Bermondsey by-election in 1983?

this is gonna sound a bit silly, but...if farron didnt look so odd and weak(he literally looks a bit ill) then i think they would do alot better

lib dems with ashdown as leader for example would clean up

sad times we live in...

thats a bit of a reach, i would imagine alot of labour mps would have unpleasant views on homosexuality in 1983

from wiki

There was much controversy over Tatchell's homosexuality. The Labour Party persuaded Tatchell to keep quiet about his sexual orientation, although he had previously declared himself 'out'. Various campaigners for opposition candidates, as well as many within the Labour Party, made homophobic comments about Tatchell. Widespread graffiti throughout the constituency referred to him in derogatory terms, while some of those putting up posters in his support found their windows attacked. Tatchell received hate mail, including a live cartridge, and was attacked when out in the street.

Even if you weren't being flippant, image has a massive bearing on perception as a strong leader.

Ed Miliband was always onto a loser because he just didn't have the statesmanlike charisma of his brother. Most voters don't look deep enough to find out about how much they make from private employment.

You're probably right in that looks sadly do play a significant role in how someone is perceived. Both Farron and Miliband look a bit too much like Wallace & Gromit characters. It shouldn't matter, but in the shallow sense that most political discussion is conducted it does.

There does seem to be a void for just who will represent the 48% though. As I said, The Tories have their core, UKIP are chasing the Labour voting Brexiteers on account of their social conservatism. If Labour veer off to counter them (and lets face it, they've hardly put up much opposition to Brexit largely on account of this), it leaves no one really representing the 'remainers' apart from the Lib Dems.

Until Corbyn's replaced, we appear to be goosed.

In terms of winning elections, getting the next leader right is hugely important. Alternatively we can continue to live in a bubble and have leaders who are popular with the grassroots and GOT posters, but not the electorate.

This really.

As it stands, Ukip, The Lib Dems, the SNP and maybe Plaid will all gain at the next election at the expense of the Tories and Labour. Ultimately, the Tories will remain in power.
