Why is there a thread about these, haven't they ceased to exist??

It's a sad day for labour supporters which I count myself one of, (not this party mind you but new labour under Smith/Blair/Brown...) the alarm bells were there when it lurched left for Miliband and the place was already a charred wreck by the time Corbyn had been voted in for the SECOND time. I mean once stupid, but twice, really?

What makes me really annoyed is that the Tories with all the problems with Brexit, funding cuts and the NHS, and Labour can't even get near to them. The incumbent government is not being held accountable and that is a stain on democracy.

I hope everyone who voted for Corbyn in the wider vote and all the MP's who did likewise hang their heads in shame for putting the party back several decades.

I refuse to believe it's about lurching to left, focus groups show people like Labour's policies- the biggest problem is how much the brand has been tainted by a combination of infighting and an inability to tackle the perception the media puts out about them.

You can't whine about the Mail or any other organisation giving you a hard time. That's the way it is, they've got to deal with it more effectively.

I voted for Corbyn, I'm not hanging my head in shame. I'm absolutely gutted by what's happened in Copeland but what was the choice? Vote for someone whose policies are barely different to the Tories? What are the likes of Liz Kendall offering that distinguishes them from the likes of Teresa May?

This is the siren call of the Blairites / "progressives", but it is nonsense.

It was Blair who gained on a left-wing platform, and then lost on a right-wing one, four million votes. It was Blair and Brown who lost Scotland. It was Blair and Brown that lost half the membership, and put the party tens of millions of pounds into debt. It was Blair who oversaw a catastrophic decline in standards in public life and then flounced off - after shredding his own claims. It was Blair and Brown who at best failed to deal with press malpractice and police interference on an industrial scale, if not actively connived in it. It was Blair and Mandelson who openly attacked Corbyn this past week, and who have - in conjunction with their allies - been slating him ever since he appeared to have a chance of winning. It was even two progressives who caused these two by elections by quitting in order to take up more highly paid posts elsewhere (at least one of which required the PM's approval).

Corbyn might not be the answer, but put the party back in the hands of the progressives and they are doomed.

As you'd expect I disagree with this post. The shift from left to right happened before Blair took control following the 1992 election defeat.

Nearly all governments rise and fall in the manner you've described. Nothing new here. You know the Batman quote, you live long enough to see yourself become the villain...

The labour party are doomed, if they keep lose safe seats to a government that is hardly getting ringing endorsements I can't see how you think it could be worse.

Having read the comments here, the Party is clearly finished and will appear as an ineffective rump in the 2020 Parliament.

A pity for the disadvantaged but they don't really matter. As long as the purity of the comrades is maintained, that's absolutely dandy.

Unfortunately the last points are just about correct for right or for wrong. I agree infighting hasn't helped but a lot of the country is weary when it comes to Corbyn and his politics. To get power you have to be moderate and centric unless there is a wave of unrest consuming the country. Not saying that won't happen, but we are not there yet.

The media does play a big part in it and you could tell from the off that Corbyn's face didn't fit, despite outstanding principles. Let's hope someone out there can unite the party whose face does fit.

To me it's bloody annoying that we are just retreading old ground that was rejected in the eighties.

You can thank Labour for putting those fascist bells to the sword last night and ending the career of that divvy who leads them to boot.

Jez we did.

northern ireland peace process, gay rights, minimum wage

new labour was far from perfect but i dread to think where we would be with continued tory governments...

Well said..the labour party lurched to the right under Blair who kowtowd to the Murdoch empire and did nothing about the bankers who put us where we are now..you just cannot solely blame Corbyn no matter what you think of him personally ..

there was talk of torys taking the middle ground in politics but i think with the state labour are in they will try and get more and more right wing policies in,the more elections they win the more they will push to the right

look out for more de-regulation, lower taxes for the well off, further dismantling of welfare and prob a vote on fox hunting..

Will it be the foxes that vote?

There is no doubt they will they'll see this as the mandate to do so , may is using 'hard Brexit ' to marginalise ukip and that leads those voters back to the Tories .

Labour held on to the seat and thank god for that but I think ultimately , and it pains me to say it , that it'll be the Tory stance on Brexit that is the nail in the coffin for that lot . That and the disgusting liar and user of tragedy that leads them .

Seriously?
Yes.

They (UKIP) were going to take over in Labour's northern heartlands, apparently.

A Remain supporting LP candidate pretty much retained the share of the vote they got in the General Election and UKIP were styopped in their tracks.

Democracy owes a thank you to Labour in that by-election. The Tories were prepared to soft peddle in Stoke and allow UKIP to establish a presence in the midlands that could easily have seen them become a real force.
