It's quite sad how economically incoherent Labour's "Buy British" policy is. I've said a few times over the years that I've worked a reasonable amount with the European Commission (as well as with various parts of the UK government), and that relationship has seemed to benefit both parties, but if they stopped working with me because "I'm not European" I suspect most would regard that as petty and foolish. It's no different. We treat others as we want to be treated ourselves.

They are only doing what for instance the french already do , add the impact of the any deal on the local economy, jobs ect into the mix , added into the bids,
as it stands now in the UK it's just the cheapest bid that normally wins.
We have seen the effect that has in Merseyside with the likes of plessey who used to do telecommunication systems for BT , the Chinese put a bid in using parts that were below cost price, unsurprisingly won the contract
Plesseys shutdown costing hundreds of good jobs in the UK and we became as a country reliant on the Chinese to build are systems, the Tories were warned this would happen by a few of there own ministers at the time.
Germany do similar when awarding contracts at regional level as well.
I am all for Labour backing the same criteria for this country.
They aren't barring anybody putting bids in European or otherwise but saying they will add the extra criteria into the equation when awarding the contracts.
Hardly Euro bashing more common sense.

TBF it’s just daft symbolism, or to be more accurate diet daft symbolism offered at a time when the Tories are giving out full fat daft symbolism for free.

They’d be better off focusing their entire argument around fairness - as in you are being screwed over whilst the government and its mates are coining it in, the government leaps to defend its media backers but does nothing for your jobs, it’s your kids who can’t get houses whilst developers and landlords get money off the state etc etc .

Not only is it demonstrably true but most people already believe it, plus you can use it to go after the Tory press.

I suppose we can be grateful that Serco et al are British companies :hayee:

Good post.
It is also the first bit of common sense policy aired by Labour on business for a long time.
It is obviously blatantly aimed at the red wall seat voters - but that's no bad thing either.
Rachel Reeves has a very solid (almost Tory like) CV to be fair. She could be formidable
opposition to the Tories.

As we don’t have a left-wing writers thread it felt most sensible to put it here as she was someone who fought for the left and from the left for those who needed it. She was a Liverpool fan but she was a good person. Felt worthwhile mentioning

very sad news that
