whilst I can understand a form of the apathy or disengagement saying ' I don't even know who the councillor or Mayor candidate or whatever it was for my area is' and then 'Red or Blue, they're all as bad as each other.' doesn't really add up. Councils make huge differences, local politics is vital
Wakefield Council has been Red as long as I remember. They're awful.
Mr Box turned down the opportunity to have a 20k-seater international cricket ground built just round the corner from mine, a stone's throw away from the M1, because - and this was his quote - "who likes cricket anyway?". Turns out he'd just received a nice little pay off from some mates who wanted to build offices (think it's PEEL Holdings who own the land, ironically considering BMD).
He also scrapped plans for Wakefield Trinity's new ground, which was to be located to the north of the city right near the M1/M62 intersection, and instead let another mate get the land to build a warehouse, which has now started without planning permission being officially granted.
He's not involved anymore I don't think, but this is the kind of tat that Labour have thrown up. And I imagine the Tory candidate would be exactly the same. The rest aren't even worth the time of day, as they'll never get in.
I should have voted. I was busy in the morning and then got out on my bike before work. Didn't finish til 11 so by then it was too late. I'd have voted Labour because I won't vote Tory and never have.
Also, the current Labour council won't be helped by the fact there's now a Tory MP in place, which was the first time that's happened in the district since the 1930s, I think.
