£177,000 pays for a few members of staff doesn’t it, what do they all do.....

A typical MP's caseworker's duties include:

Dealing with correspondence, telephone enquiries and emails.
Attending surgeries and other meetings and taking notes.
Organising meetings and events.
Gathering information relevant to assist cases.
Liaising with various agencies and organisations to resolve constituents' problems.
Identifying and responding to local casework trends in the constituency
Logging all cases, monitoring progress and ensuring that actions are taken.
Ability to advise on subjects such as housing, welfare benefits or immigration issues or community advocacy.
Usually a few junior staff or volunteers/interns to supervise.

It's a busy job even for a backbench MP, let alone one like Lammy in the Shadow Cabinet. Other roles include secretarial staff. P/A, with Communications Officer one that has grown in recent years due to social media.

Some staff work part-time for more than one MP.

I think you’ve got it wrong on this one. It was a very misleading tweet giving the impression he is using public funds to renovate his duck pond or something.

No, my concern is the cost of each and every MP, Lords, each MSP, each Assembly member etc etc. Every time you turn around there seems to be yet another politician and an entourage of people on the public purse....

How much should an MP be paid? How much should a member of their staff be paid? How much should they pay for offices? How many staff members are they allowed? If you could show your working that would be great

I think what’s happened is that you were taken in by that tweet, which is fair as although it’s not inaccurate it is extremely misleading. You’re now trying to create a controversy where there really isn’t one. Being a constituent MP is (or should be) a very difficult role that will require a team for support. I’d imagine the higher profile the MP, the greater amount of expenses they’d have as they’d be less able to concentrate on constituent affairs and probably would require a separate team for other roles they might hold. As others have said, with that taken into account I don’t think Lammy’s expenses are particularly excessive tbh. I don’t think you do either really but we all know that rule number one of current affairs foruming is never back down and I respect that.

This is pretty much spot on. Lammy's expenses don't seem particularly exorbitant to me and, anyway, there are limits on what they can spend; the details will be on the IPSA website. Where there has been abuse, or possible abuse, in the past has been when MPs employ family members, usually doing admin work. That was definitely abused at times and was stopped for new MPs in 2017, though people already employed could, and do, carry on. I know, for instance, that Hilary Benn and Ian Lavery used to employ their wives but I'm not sure if they still do and I'm sure they were both legitimate!
