Just on the flags thing. I’ve always thought flags are a bit of a Rorschach test - their meaning is what we individually bring to them.
The Union Flag for me means team GB in the Olympics. That’s my instinctive response. No more, no less. For members of the armed forces, they can bring sense of service and duty. For some, just a sense of country or shared history. For others, no doubt there’s white supremacist, or nationalist connotations. But it’s the meaning that you bring to it.
After reading this thread yesterday though, I did laugh this morning, putting sugar in my tea, to find out that Silver Spoon have been dog whistling the UKIP manifesto at us, and we never even noticed.

Yes mate. The guy did a book called prisoners of geography which you might have read. Talks about how the geographical structure of nations aided their development. Bit basic in parts but I enjoyed it.
