Just seen his latest video: backgrounded with Union Jack and stressing the hardship to businesses.

If you didn't know who he was and you landed in 2021 from a decade ago you'd swear he was the Tory or UKIP leader.
There's nothing new in politics.

The UJ in the 60s was a symbol of modernism - a symbol of the music and fashion industry and manufacturing industry; the symbol of a confident nation that projected its values out onto the world*.

The use of the UJ today is far different: its use is to underline insularity and hostility to migrants, to exclude others. Starmer knows that and he's using it as a dog whistle to the millions of creepy borderline fascists up and down this land.

*Obvioulsy not for a certain community in NI at the time.

Worth noting that people from other countries in the 1960s unironically wore tops whose design was nothing but the UJ.

Can't remember the last time that I saw someone wearing it over here, and if I did I'd assume they were a Brexiteer rather than an American making a statement until proven otherwise.

It's sad how we've let our flags devolve into symbols of intolerance and hate.

Yes, spot on. It was an icon of progressiveness (outside the Nationalist areas of NI).

Times change and so too does the symbolism behind that flag.

As I say, there's nothing new in organisations using the flag for political means.

If only we had a LP of that calibre again, ready to call out class enemies hiding behind a flag.

Now we have a Tory Lite second XI wrapping themselves in one trying to appeal to knuckle dragging serfs.
