I'm not sure they did really give them many opportunities. They'll be the odd anedoctal evidence but I don't think there's any actual evidence or research to show that they provided many real opportunities. Most modern research shows them to be at best achieving nothing and at worst decreasing overall social mobility.

I would disagree tbh...I think getting rid of Grammar Schools and assisted places was an act of grotesque folly....

Appreciate your response there but I’m still gonna disagree. Would write something more measured but I think my boss is already querying my work output today
It did what it was supposed to do - giving clever working class kids a chance to shine...( like the 1944 education act 11+ was doing in the 50s...angry young man, look back in anger etc and the 60s before the Idealogues ' ked it up in the 70s) the fact that many less deserving people abused the system is human nature.
iirc, this was Thatchers first education policy as leader and if it boiled her piss that some scousers took advantage of it well that's a bonus
It worked for my lads, which is all that matters to me and davek can fume all he likes

Total Rollocks
2 of my lads went there and I know this not to be true.
You know what not to be true? That they divide kids within the same class?

Pffft!

There's emotion that takes control of this debate and serves to obscure matters: anyone who attended those places have affection for them and identify with them (pretty much like most other kids do with their schools); and people who send their kids thre take great exception to anyone who opposes grammar schools because they see it as a slight on their judgement and choice. That creates a defensive attitude.

If you take that emotion out of the equation and ask anyone this question: "Do you think it's right that kids at the age of 11 get seperated and some get better schooling in well resourced schools and some dont, I guarantee that almost 100% would say it was not right.

I can understand why people have this feeling based on emotion or anecdote (did me good, etc,) and indeed my gut instinct might well say they I like them, thankfully my gut doesn't get too make many decisions, but there's little actual evidence Grammar Schools were a positive and quite a bit to show they were a negative. If there's any on the contrary I'd be very interested to see it.

Anneliese Dodds showing the chronic lack of political talent in the Labour Party. Useless.
She is woeful.

There are mutterings that she'll be the first to get sacked in the shadow cabinet. The torturer's friend Starmer will want to promote another Blairite who the financial houses who own Starmer will trust. The disgusting Rachel Reeves or the equally disgusting Yvette Cooper.

You're right mate.

As I said I attended one, and theres nothing defensive or nostalgic here. I completely understand the need to remove segregation in education, and attending such a school- and seeing what goes on is a big reason why.

I dont like much about Gove, but he was right to oppose grammars and argue for better schools for everyone.
