So by that token, unions blindly pouring money into Labour needs to be considered?

It is a partnership, there has to be give and take from both sides. Keir is trying to make the party electable, some sort of sweetener needs to be handed back. Could be the end of zero hour contracts or alike. Others will know far better than me what the unions want.

What I can guarantee though if they aren't all supporting each other Labour will not win the next election unless the tories score an unbelievably big own goal. And given what they have already done whilst in power just shows the size required.

It is also likely there won't be much money in the pot to do much if Labour get into power. If they spend too heavily they will likely be thrown out in 5 years despite it being obvious the Tories are the ones that have damaged the economy. As @tsubaki says the agenda is against them therefore requires a transition parliament where the highest priorities are dealt with to try and balance the wealth creation but not be too dramatic to upset the voters who do not like unions.

All of the above is interesting. However the wider point is, the Unions have been ploughing money into Labour for 40 years now and recieved virtually nothing back. If you are using the Einstein quote, it would suggest going another direction is the best option (and perhaps is a limitation of the quote).

Again it depends on who defines the metrics. I would say businesses did will under new labour with boutique manufacturing and apprenticeships. Unfortunately it seems the unions still think the world hasn't moved on in terms of what a strong economy looks like. They had their chance with large scale government backed manufacturing and they blew it with infighting and not catering to the customer.

Of course as we stand here in 2020 it looks like a lot of the service sector will be wiped out and God knows what Brexit will do on top. It is almost like we are approaching a clean sheet of paper and from the ashes there will be opportunities for the right minded people once covid has been contained.

I think you're arguing a range of wider points, which are worthwhole and interesting points but one thats are ultimately highly contestable.

The issue I queried was a much narrower one. They have spent 10+ years funnelling money into the Labour Party to lose. If you subscribe to Einsteins view, to blindly keep doing so is stupid, thats all.

Good speech, Keir. Love that the lady sitting next to him was tweeting and retweeting stuff non stop on her phone. can't believe they get paid!

Labour are in a real mess here. Their high profile civic leaders in the north are arguing for a light touch on restrictions and to keep their economies open - yapping away with that message in the media all day and night - while the national leadership is now arguing for the bazooka of a full lockdown (Ashworth joined Starmer this morning in calling for a lockdown).

Imagine if this mess would have occurred under Corbyn? The media would have devoted itself to highlighting it and the LP back benchers would have launched a leadership election to remove him.

The LP under Starmer: a right wing car crash.

Right wing by backing SAGE ;) Starmer has put himself in a strong position on this. It's either SAGE or Johnson. Not really a difficult choice for me. And will win him support in the North along with compensation for business thus people jobs effected by further lockdown. Without actually knowing detail of Starmer and the northern Mayor's response to Johnsons government, all very coordinated to me!

No, there's no co-ordination when you have a national party message calling for a full lockdown and a local party message of 'leave our local economy' alone.

It's a mess.
