“Following his Budget, the head of McVitie’s has said that it has been harder to understand what the case for investment in the UK is.

“So while the Prime Minister has been hobnobbing in Brazil, businesses have been struggling to digest his Budget.

“Isn’t it the case that the Employment Rights Bill shows that it is not only the ginger nut that is causing him problems?”

From the ballerina above.

@Kurt. is this some of your work?

More Labour sleaze this morning. Transport Secretary sacked. It’s amazing how people in such positions can’t hold down a job for more than 4 or 5 months.

….seems like she resigned, which helps Starmer lots. Misleading the police incorrectly claiming her mobile phone had been stolen in a mugging when a parliamentary candidate in 2014. Skeletons usually come out in Government.

I’ll always remember Louise Haigh from the budget speech. As Reeves mentioned HS2, the camera panned to Haigh standing in the Chamber and she clearly mouthed, ‘what a fck up’. I was sure it would be a GIF but nobody else seemed to pick up on it.

Was furious at first be it a mistake should be correcting her report when she found it as i believedit was recent. Reading on it's 13 years ago and spent conviction...

And I do wonder why she was prosecuted rather than given a caution. We've literally had man become prime minister planning to have journalist beaten up. And now also have Kemi Badenoch leading the Conservatives despite admitting to a criminal offence - hacking a website. Worst of all Reforms MP James McMurdock, and his push on a former girlfriend which turned out to be serious assault and prison sentence, barley comparable outrage.

Ever the comparisons of double standards in media and justice system this is it.

I think they could probably weather it, but Starmer has made a big thing of unimpeachable behaviour in Government so probably doesn't want to have it hanging around the media. She's jumped before he had to take any action which leaves them both free for a reappointment down the line.

As you say it's wild what stories emerge about Tories who just cling on until forced out, and then this possible mistake from over a decade ago fells a Labour minister in just a few hours.

Just going to be galling having thick right wing nobs crowing, when there is obvious double standard depending on wealth and political allegiance here in UK.

Do tend to think there must be a bit more to it, usually start of campaign...

Myself suspect there's plenty who have reported items being stolen only for them to turn up and then not inform the authorities. I doubt many have been prosecuted for it. So why her, no personal gain as its reported as "work phone", employer at material loss surely?

Indeed not sure why it's a resigning matter as it appears she hadn't hidden the incident or conviction and had let the Labour Party know about it from onset..

I'm also wondering how the story has emerged now. Wonder if someone has an axe to grind? Guess we will see if more emerges over weekend...

Tbh I don't like the the fact labour have forced her to resign. I understand we want politicians be be at a higher standard, and certain crimes or behaviours like Tories breaking the Covid rule, are just cause for resignations.

It does for me send a wrong message that even after you have faced your punishment you can't then move on and integrate back into society or even be someone that can be a representative, which after all isn't that the point of any justice system? To learn from your mistakes and be rehabilitated.

Anyone would think she had form for going out groping waiters at fancy tory only clubs and that the pm then danced about singing about it and reveling in it.
Ah well, another woman chased out of government, she didn't even get the chance to try to cut palliative care for those dying from cancer off.

Yeah, my thoughts as well. Not really a fraud-type thing as was a work phone, so no benefit to her at all. Doesn’t seem like something worth resigning over, so suspect there’s something not known yet, and she’s trying (being told) to get away from the party before it breaks.

This is a different story to the one I read yesterday. Yesterday I read it was one work phone, stolen during a mugging. The Times insinuating something more.
