Poor decision I think. Haigh had signalled intention to make broad changes and hold companies to account for their actions. The aftermath of the Haigh resignation in the media will be to ask Starmer why - if he knew about Haigh's fraudulent claim for a new phone - did he make her a Cabinet member.
But the real story here is Starmer laying down the law to his Cabinet members and the back benchers that he wont tolerate any dissension, which Haigh did when carrying on criticism of the P&O deal a month or so back after it became Starmer's view that their union busting conduct should be ignored for the sake of investment.
This is all about internal 'Labour' Party discipline and Starmer is prepared to ride out any embarrassment over what he knew about Haigh's misdeemeanour to secure it.
Do tend to think there must be a bit more to it, usually start of campaign...
Myself suspect there's plenty who have reported items being stolen only for them to turn up and then not inform the authorities. I doubt many have been prosecuted for it. So why her, no personal gain as its reported as "work phone", employer at material loss surely?
Indeed not sure why it's a resigning matter as it appears she hadn't hidden the incident or conviction and had let the Labour Party know about it from onset..
I'm also wondering how the story has emerged now. Wonder if someone has an axe to grind? Guess we will see if more emerges over weekend...
Of course……
The winner is Starmer: micro-managing the whole party and reinforcing his dominance.Poor decision I think. Haigh had signalled intention to make broad changes and hold companies to account for their actions.
The winners from this are the old boys networks running the transport industry.
Seems to be rumours there may be more to come out , that labour have acted quickly knowing this . Seems to be a number of work phones that have gone missing previously
I thought all the snakes were in the Tory party kicking Boris out.No.10 are in full throw anyone under a bus but insist Starmer knew nothing about it. It’s amazing how much stuff, from his CPS days and right up to today, that he ‘didn’t know about’. I have some sympathy for the lady involved but Snake Charmer Starmer needs to start answering some questions. You can only imagine his feigned pious horror had this been done by anyone else…….
Are they saying he didn’t know ? Seems a bit of an odd statement if that’s the line they’re running . Puzzling really , it might be totally to protect himself & his government or maybe like discussed more is coming .No.10 are in full throw anyone under a bus but insist Starmer knew nothing about it. He's like a modern say St Patrick.I'm not following 'snake charmer' as much of an insult. It implies the other people around him are the snakes (problem) but he's managing to deal with them.
I couldn't care less where they were educated as long as they were decent people trying to work toward an egalitarian society. This lot are scum who want to double down on austerity and target immigrants.![]()
