Everyone has to react somehow. In my mind we have to be closer than ever before to our nearest neighbours especially if the guessing of Trump actions bare out, trade sanctions forced peace Ukraine and Russia. Uk have to do and react and do what's best. The framing of many political debates is going to change. Becoming closer to EU again suddenly becomes palatable and accetable to few more than it did last week.
Pete you’re a sensible and experienced man you don’t honestly believe trump do that , do you ? As a country we had this exact conversation when he was President last time . If he’s imposing tariffs I can’t see a reason why we wouldn’t be in the firing line .Not really. There is now a very good chance of a free trade agreement with the USA because of Brexit (not Starmer). Trump now sees the EU as a competitor and really doesn’t want the U.K. getting back into bed with them. This will save Starmer as otherwise the budget and Tariffs to the USA will kill our economy……..

I’d be delighted if we got a free trade deal with him last time and I think some of the reporting of his plans and its impact could be a bit hyperbolic but he doesn’t feel like he’ll be in particularly benevolent mood to the UK .
I mean I get your Brexit position but you say closer like it’s a dirty word. whatever you think of Europe and I feel like I know your thoughts , surely a close relationship has to be a good thing in so many ways . The idea that we’re manoeuvring our way back seems fanciful , you won (well done ) but trying to repair what seems some fairly obvious damage feels like a positive .Things have changed since he first got in and Starmer set on a ‘closer relationship’ with the EU. If he wants to compete with the EU it’s preferable to him that we are not involved with the EU as they are only stronger with our involvement. But we shall see if Starmer can capitalise on this…..

As regards trump to me the idea the bloke whose whole ideal is “America first “ would be looking to give us a free trade deal feels a bit unlikely. Like I said I’d be delighted but equally surprised.
