Especially as a former human rights lawyer that’s spoken repeatedly about breaking the people smuggling gangs that exploit the vulnerable & desperate.

I believe the idea to be to get the criminal gangs, breaking whichever laws they are and cooperating Europe wide to prosecute them.

It's just occurred to me, with the Albania return scheme, that metric of crossings has dropped significantly (?) yet seems to have been replaced with a set of peoples from further away (Vietnamese, Philippines). This is only thought atm, but have the people traffickers/smugglers found a threshold of capacity and now those suitable to be allowed to stay is the qualifying remit for the risk and the reward? (risk to the poor people losing their lives in the channel, reward being tens of thousands of pounds/euros in the pockets of the organised criminals)

The substance is the same: he's viewing illegal immigration into this country as terrorism...that's called dog whistle politics.
