Current Affairs The Labour Party

It just sounds too much like a distraction argument or a way to diminish people's opinions on one topic to be very honest, which is why I said it doesn't add anything to the actual discussion in any thread on one of these situations. I don't infer that you are doing that, you clearly have a strong opinion on it but that type argument in the wrong place can come across like that.

I think if you have points to make on the "prioritisation" of current affair topics it could be an interesting discussion on a separate thread.

I had forgotten about my post in the Africa thread. I quickly read again and I don't think it bears getting into on this thread, but I can only say I responded to how some of the posts in the thread came across. I don't fully get your point that it shows some mindset that you are talking about.

More on topic, Labour are like Dyche. Of the options available at the time they were s reasonable one for the situation, and you'd hope they can do better than the last incumbent and beyond that maintain hope something better will come along for your club/country.
I appreciate your perspective, but I think this is actually part of the issue flagged. When other crises are brought up, it’s not to diminish the significance of what’s happening in Gaza, far from it. My point is that it feels like, for some, there’s a reluctance to engage with the suffering in other parts of the world.

What’s disappointing is the assumption that drawing attention to places like Sudan or the DRC is somehow a ‘distraction.’ It’s not. These are all humanitarian crises that deserve full attention, and it is part of a broader consideration about how we, as a global community, choose to prioritise suffering.

I understand that many people feel passionately about Palestine, and rightly so. But if raising awareness of other issues is seen as diminishing the focus on Gaza, then we’re missing the bigger picture. We should be advocating for justice across the board, and not seeing one cause as more deserving than another.

Let us hope that justice and a two state solution can be found for Palestine, but this is the Labour thread so let’s not derail it further.

At the Downing Street lobby briefing, the prime minister’s spokespersonsaid the government remained opposed to the idea of paying reparations for Britain’s historic role in the slave trade. The spokesperson also said there would be no apology at the Commonwealth heads of government meeting (Chogm) this week.

He said:

Reparations are not on the agenda for the Commonwealth heads of government meeting. The government’s position on this has not changed, we do not pay reparations.

The prime minister’s attending this week’s summit to discuss shared challenges and opportunities faced by the Commonwealth including driving growth across our economies.
Asked about an apology, the spokesperson said:

The position on apology remains the same. We won’t be offering an apology at Chogm, but we will continue to engage with partners on the issues as we work with them to tackle the pressing challenges of today and indeed for the future generations.

If it stops health professionals leaving and attracts more people into health profession. Yes raising pay to compete with other sectors is pragmatic and commonsense.

Did they have any choice?
I'm not suggesting it's a bad thing, just remarking that we support raising pay despite worsening service in one industry but not others.

Would you agree in any part that the NHS has become a sort of golden goose for politicians, where there is always a crisis, a scandal, efficiencies to be made, new attitudes and management to implement, an organisation "to big to fail". So a never ending conveyor belt of political opportunity to talk tough upon? "Labour will save the NHS we implemented", "The tory-scum are the only party that can be trusted financially to bring the change to allow the NHS to not only survive but to thrive for the nation" etc...

Sadly, the NHS is a sort of catch all final stop for many of societies ills, fat, depressed, malnutrition, addiction, old, socially adrift, county lines, all take a turn under the nose of some Dr or medical professional of some sort or other. The slashing of community support has heaped so much more pressure just in terms of cases (ignoring the breadth of difference in cases) onto an already overburdened system.

Expectation is unrealistic, the country is on it's backside worse than it was after the bankers had a beano in 08/09. Same old situation, don't get injured or sick, the system is over run, maintain your health as best you can and hope and pray for the best.
