They will make him out to be a hypocrite .
The general public will believe it in the end when these stories keep getting rinsed and repeated on a daily basis.
They dont have to 'believe' anything. It's not an article of faith. These hospitality gifts are actually happening - and they'll continue to happen because the Starmer leadership has distanced themselves from saying that they'll end.

It's only right that these very well off people cut those gifts out. The suspicion that the gifts are for something in return will always be there.

The government have a choice: declare all gifts (including hospitality) against the rules or suffer the consequences a public viewing them as sleaze-ridden as the outgoing Tories. This won't go back in the box and hidden away.

The man is a hypocrite. Mr Honesty and Piety has been shown up for what he really is…when he promised a government of service, no one thought he meant self-service……

GB Energy - that's something keep an eye with next month's budget.

Media reports said Reeves was considering a change to move the government's new National Wealth Fund, which seeks to leverage private investment with initial public funding, and GB Energy, a holding firm overseeing the push for green power, off the government's books.

You're blaming the messenger.

That's not very wise if you want a representative government.

Call out grift wherever it comes from; to blanket everyone who does so as 'Torygraph' readers and in league with the right is ridiculously out of whack.
Something you've failed to do in the Tory thread since I've been on the forum.

Interesting article. Does well to highlight how the narrative has played out.

First below the headline it says “Widespread opposition to the winter fuel allowance cuts”

But in the article it is summarised as

“If there was a glimmer of good news for the government, it was that this group didn’t object to the idea of means testing the payment, but rather they felt the pension credit threshold was too low, and too much of a cliff edge.”

A view shared by the majority voicing an opinion on here. A bit of extra handwringing by the Guardian because touchy feely vibes are important to us left leaning souls.

Then this bit

Perhaps most damagingly for the government, and again in common with other conversations with voters, some made a direct link between the decision to cut the winter fuel allowance and ministers accepting luxury goods. Nicola said: “I don’t think you can cut the winter allowance and then receive hundreds of thousands of designer goods for your wife.”

Tory media working as intended. Right down to the massive exaggeration on the figures. They may have lost Nicola’s vote, but they can still pull her stings.

Most interestingly though. No mention that making the decision on the WFA right out the gate was an entirely political one. Rarely mentioned in the media. This was no faux pas.

Losing the “good vibes” of the “honeymoon period” was an intentional choice. New governments have raised taxes at this point for the same reasons.

It had the full media spotlight, but the decision means it also won’t dominate the budget headlines when Labour need to show they are serious about tax avoidance, inequality & protecting voters from corporate excess.

The rules? No. They've been very careful to remain within the rules
Nice to see you admit they weren’t “caught red handed”. You don’t get caught sticking to the rules after all.

Wanting gifts out of politics is something we can agree on. Alluding that Labour have broken some sort of promise on honesty is the disconnect that plays into the Tory narrative.

Which lets not forget is “See! They’re just as bad as us!” because that’s all they have.
