I broadly agree, it's where you draw the line.

However, there is another way to view it. The reality is, older voters don't vote for them, Labour wins votes on the under 65s. They are essentially asking voters who don't vote for them angry.

At a more complex level, there was some research that showed when Labour was tough on Refugees under Blair, the public liked it, because it kind of countered the perception. It was a nice synthesis. I wonder if this is how this played out.

Nobody views Labour as heartless, people think they aren't prepared to be tough/ruthless. Like they're not nice things, but they're not awful things for Labour.

I'm a sceptic, but just being nice isn't how you win elections. The Tories would never win, Blair would never have won etc if it's a competition of how you are nice.

I'm sure that would be thinking. Or maybe Reeves is just unimaginative.

Governments are supposed to govern for the whole of the U.K. , who people voted for or would vote for should be irrelevant. You say nobody views Labour as heartless, well that’s a view that has already changed with this mean act I’m afraid. Reeves and Starmer now appear as idiots, to voters and unions, some achievement after a few weeks in charge……..anyway, goodnight….

I’ve never supported any cuts to those that need support. This is no different. What is different is some on here making excuses for Starmer and Reeves, and some making jokes about it, just because it’s Labour doing it. Shameful really….

No, you’ve just continued to vote for a party that doesn’t believe in the welfare state.

You’re so transparent. You don’t care, you’re just using this as fuel to have a dig because you’re heartbroken that your hero was found out and rightly ousted.

Partially yes, but I'm sure most parties ultimately recognize where their core votes come from. The Conservatives get a lot of votes from older people, and regularly ensured pensions would rise faster than inflation at a time when earnings were substantially below that.

And yes, I agree with you, but what I'm saying, in a roundabout way, is it's probably not a bad thing for them, in the context of the goals they have. This is quite a centrist Labour org, and that is the space they wish to occupy. I don't think they are worried about being seen as heartless, in fact they may well want to be viewed in such a way.

Keir Starmer put people in jail for a livong. He's clearly not some liberal like me.

….as an OAP who will lose the heating allowance this winter, I have absolutely no issue with the new Government policy. My mother-in-law is 96, she’s by no means wealthy and I don’t think she’ll get it either but it’ll make no difference to her.

The poorest pensioners should still get it and the aim should be to give everybody entitled to Pension Credit help in claiming it.

Myself and my wife are also pensioners, and will also lose.

However, the issue is broader than that. I've voted Labour all my life. I don't like the fact that they are, in effect, financially attacking what might be termed the ordinary members of the population. Carol Vorderman (love her or hate her) was on GMTV this morning and pointed out that there are other areas that the Government could have recouped billions of £s from, pointing out certain areas of high finance that are paying basic rate tax when they should be on the highest rate. She also said, in so many words, that Labour removing the heating allowance could be their 'Poll Tax' moment, even this early in their tenure. She also poured scorn on the point that Labour is keeping the 'triple-lock', when the triple lock is simply keeping pace with inflation - in fact, it is driven by inflation! A Labour lackey was also on TV this morning using the triple-lock as an excuse for dropping the heating allowance. An absolute plonker!

As the Who sang in 'Won't get fooled again': Here's the new boss, same as the old boss.

I say all of the above, not as a pensioner, but as a Labout supporter all my life and someone who is appalled at this Labour Government going after the ordinary people in this country, when there are others they should be going after. Starmer & Reeves = Truss & Kwateng Mark 2...

Again, it’s a fiver a week.

Eventually, we’re all gonna have to chip in to sort out this mess.

Would the proposed increase in state pension not cover the loss of WFA?

Increasing by £460.
