I'm not a fan of inheritance tax, I understand the logic behind it, it just targets too many people who are undeserving of being taxed like that such as your old man. It's an easier way to collect tax than chasing all the millionaires/billionaires who consistently find new ways to avoid paying. Instead of easy wins, the governments left and right should be going hard on these pieces of work.
I’m not either, I’ve said in here before that the concept of taking cash away that people want to give their kids is an emotive issue and a tough sell, but a google search reckons that only 4% of people pay any form of inheritance tax.

People seem to have a notion that their hard working, working or middle class parents are gonna get fleeced when they die, and their lovely, homely, semi detached is gonna be stolen by the government, and their entire working salary taken away from them.

It’s a myth. 96% of people will never have to think about it, but it seems to occupy a lot of media attention.

Exactly, it's just sound bites to distract from the fact that governments both left and right are absolutely awful at recouping the billions of missing tax from a minority of people doing their best to avoid it.

My old man started off as an apprentice on the docks at 14.

Fast forward to seventy years later to now.

He’s worked for over forty, steadily progressing through his job.

He’s not rich and he’s not poor.

He’s a tight arse or as he calls it “ careful “ and saved or invested whatever spare money he had.

Over the years his savings and investments, grew and he’s now worth a few bob.

Bar the odd holiday, he’s never touched his savings / investments, as he wants to leave his money to :

(a) my mum, should he go first.
(b) his kids ( me )
(c) his grandkids ( my kids )
(d) charity.

Why should an ordinary working man, who’s saved all his life, to “do the right thing “ by his family, pay 100% inheritance tax ?
Where has this come from?
There is no chance whatsoever such an alteration could happen, not least because the tory king decided what he paid on his ma's estate, and similarly his son will do similar when he leaves this veil of tears.

From a poster saying that everyone should have to pay 100% inheritance tax.

Absolutely correct why should he have to, some on here want you to feel like the anti Christ because you want to leave you're kids/ grandkids a little legacy. Sod them, there is a word you can call that it's called envy.

Can you find this illusive post demanding full forfeiture of any and all worldly goods, valuables, monies, trophies, titles, treasures, lands, leases, and works of art upon ceasing to exist please?

A poster called Xizor or something similar two or three pages back, thought it's a crime that anything should be passed onto you're Children, or something or other. Catcher saying something similar.

Sadly they had been lead a merry dance by the forums Lucius Malfoy. I knew tory in chief would have his fingerprints on this maelstrom of mess*.

Always treat the very loud tory espousing his virtue with the contempt his behaviours have repeatedly earned. Always a conservative.

Yes. I'm quite happy to do that if the tax rate is 100%.

Inheritance tax tends to affect more middle income families in my experience. The richest have more desire and access to weasel around it fairly easily.

Hypothetical questions get hypothetical answers. One side offered to leave something for their offspring, the other suggested leaving nothing on the proviso that no one else could and the state consumed it all - meaning everyone's offspring gets the benefit. Some kind of watered down communistic ideals being bartered around. The battle between the haves and the have nots will rumble on as disparity only deepens. Those opting out or to have no offspring will increase also. Once the gentry here had no foreign lands to conquer and peoples to subjugate and then exploit, they only had the serfs they used to rely on to do their dirty work left to rule and rape.

It always comes back - to 'I'm alright Jack!'.

It's not a crime, don't be silly. I just think it would be a much fairer and more equitable society if family wealth didn't stay entrenched in the same place.

Your children wouldn't need that extra leg up (that others can't provide), because there would be plenty more to go round. You also mentioned it as being some sort of Communist ideal at some point which is also false, because I'm not advocating state ownership of property, just relatively radical rates of redistribution when it's no longer being used by the owners.

Given how much wealth is being hoarded, I think most kids would benefit from such a plan, not lose out.

However as I hope I've made clear, I accept these ideas pretty much go against the natural human instinct to look after our own, and no serious party would ever stand on such a platform, therefore it'll never happen. You would actually require some sort of Communist revolution, and I don't believe Communism is a workable form of government at a national level (my take is that it requires that every participant know each other).
