The problem is the only people who are clued up enough and use accountants etc to ensure they don't pay inheritance tax are the wealthy.

The working class get stiffed all the time because they don't know how to work the system.

If all the working class avoided paying any inheritance tax all of a sudden you can bet your bottom dollar there would be an uproar, system would change and the wealthy would find another loophole

Having property to leave or not is what I was getting at by "how much". Someone who ploughs their wages into rent their entire lives doesn't have a pot of property gold to bequeath to a generation that didn't contribute to it.

Many of the working class actually do avoid paying inheritance tax by not accruing assets that are taxable, thanks to generous thresholds for payment. Those thresholds then stop reasonably wealthy people having to pay much either, if at all.

Property gold, it's a semi detached in Widnes mate, as I said if I can help my kids I will, my or my wife's parents were in no position to do so, but we managed, life went on. So if I can leave my kids a bit better off than I was, then that will make me a little bit happier going to my grave.
