“A minister was left wriggling today as she denied the mooted ban on smoking in pub beer gardens is an 'attack on the hospitality industry'.

Commons Leader Lucy Powell was grilled over the proposals as she toured broadcast studios ahead of Parliament returning from its summer break tomorrow.

The industry has warned that the surprise move to extend restrictions to outdoor areas such as beer gardens and outside stadiums could devastate businesses.

Some have estimated that one in eight pubs could be forced to shut as a result.

Ms Powell told Sky News' Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips that any measures would be subject to a full consultation.

'We're certainly not attacking the hospitality industry. We support the hospitality industry. It's vital to our communities, our high street, our economy,' she said.”…

They don’t even realise the lies they are telling. Yes the hospitality is indeed vital, but they certainly are attacking the industry……
See this? That's you, that is.

Internet has been around for over 30 years in mainstream and readily available for most. I’m not so sure people can still use the excuse of not being able to use it, when they’ve had time to learn and/or will have family members/friends that could assist them.

Pensioners being too lazy to learn a new skill should not be used as an excuse, as to why they aren’t claiming what they are entitled to.

Are you just trying to be a wum. My wife, early 70’s, was fully internet proficient but now can’t even switch the computer on. You haven’t a bleeding clue do you…..

You, or somebody else could fill the form out on her behalf. It would be the same as completing a paper form for a vulnerable person, the support of family, friends, care workers, is all there. You are just being obtuse now.

Pete, respectfully, that might not be the greatest example. Your wife's condition no doubt restricts her in many other ways. Indeed, younger people who suffer misfortune may find their abilities impaired too.

But, I agree more widely, for many older folk it can be an issue. Been trying to get my 84yr old Mom comfortable with an old tablet of ours this afternoon. Let's just says she's not going to be debating in the CA any time soon...

If she manages it, tell her to join the the Oldies Thread or Messy Mascots…

My previous point of course being that while many can do these things, a great many can’t, and as you say it could be at various ages, but predominantly affects the older generation. It, like the stupid outdoor smoking ban in beer gardens, may sound good but if introduced will cause mayhem. God only knows what idiots in the CS are helping them. I fully expect a row back on these issues or they can kiss goodbye to any possibility of garnering votes in the future. Even worse is that the more people dig into the numbers the government will end up with a lower tax take. Pure unadulterated stupidity……

The paper form is 24 pages long and has 243 questions, let me know when you’ve filled in one for someone….

I would happily sit with anyone and complete the form with them. If they need that money then I’d do it no problem at all, especially if they were a family or friend of the family.

I get that you’ll be spending the next 4 years picking holes in as many things as you can, but you’re really focusing on something that could easily be sorted with the right support.

Of course you would, as would anyone who cares. But the policy will end up losing money for the taxman, as it’s now going to be paying out more that tenfold in benefits while putting millions of OAP’s through the trauma of applying for it. Is this a caring government that looks after the elderly ? I think we are going to find an all out attack on OAP’s come the budget, but Starmer and Reeves will be ok, because by the time they reach OAP status there will no doubt be a Tory government in place or a real Labour one like the one that that introduced the payment in the first palace and that gets rid of this folly….

Maybe Boris was right, he should have let them all die?

And what is your view on these policies…….

What difference does that make?

Keep coming in here and braying at the lack of empathy a Labour government of - what, two months - has shown?

I don't even vote Labour and the lack of accountability you hold the previous government leaves me cold.

I genuinely admire that you clearly care for those you hold dearest, I accept this place exists as some kind of valve for you, but your "ha, I could care less" point scoring is abhorrent to me. A point scoring, it's all for the lolz Tory. Not for me.

Raised by a single mum, demonised by the Tories as a benefit scrounger, sponge, whatever the Daily Mail wants to throw at us... we're twice the people your paymasters will ever be.

That said, I wish nothing but peace, happiness and love to you and yours.
