“A Cabinet minister has refused four times to say who would pay for the bumper pay deal for train drivers.

Bridget Phillipson, the Education Secretary, repeatedly dodged questions about where the Government would find the money for the 14 per cent rise over three years, designed to bring an end to rail strikes.

The “no-strings” deal, which saw ministers ditch Tory demands for an end to generous working practices, including a four-day week, looks likely to be accepted after it was hailed on Wednesday by Aslef, the train drivers’ union.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Thursday, Ms Phillipson was asked four times who would foot the bill for the pay rise.

She refused to be drawn, saying only that the Government would ensure a “fair deal” for passengers and pointing to “wider reform” of the industry.”…
I cant wait to tell my Father in Law how angry this has made the Tories.

Hes been heavily involved in this deal for the last 6 months.

It's class, isn't it. A government using public money to get things moving, simultaneously putting extra cash in the pockets of key workers (and probably just reversing real-term pay cuts anyway), cash which will then likely be spent & start sloshing around the economy. Win-win-win.

You'd have to hold really anti-UK sentiments to be critical of this, and be the sort of gloomster & doomster who loves to talk our country down.

I for 1 would much rather see the money sent to Rwanda or even the offshore bank accounts of Tory donors.

So it’s looking like most public sector workers are going to get double digit above inflation pay rises. This is standard Labour policy and as always will drive inflation through the roof. We saw all this in the 70’s, though many on here weren’t even born then. So get used to it guys, house prices will go through the roof, weekly shopping bills will be all over the place, the public sector will be well looked after and private sector employees will , as usual, pick up the bill. Anyway, enjoy….
Why just look at the plebs though Pete?

Surely this kind of reality should be the focus.

So, not content with their recent pay rise LNER (now owned by the government) train drivers will be striking every weekend and as if by magic the Border Force will also be striking…”happy days are here again…..” Once you cave in to one or two unions, every other public sector union will jump in…welcome to the 70’s…..

What the hell are you even talking about here?
