“GPs are demanding an 11 per cent funding rise in the hope of becoming the latest group of public sector workers to secure a cash boost from Sir Keir Starmer.

Family doctors across the country are currently taking part in industrial action after the British Medical Association (BMA) threatened to bring the NHS to a “standstill” to gain increased funding for surgeries.

Leaked letters reveal that the Government has awarded them an above inflation boost of 7.4 per cent – which the BMA has said is insufficient. The union is instead holding out for an uplift of 10.7 per cent in one year, saying this would bring real-terms income back to 2018/19 levels.

It comes as the Government handed train drivers a nearly 15 per cent pay rise over three years on Wednesday in an effort to bring two years of strikes to an end.

However, ministers have refused to say how that pay rise will be funded, raising the prospect of tax increases in the autumn Budget.

On Thursday night, senior Tories accused Labour of allowing pensioners to freeze by cutting winter fuel payments while finding the cash to fund the salary increases for train drivers.

They also claimed that, by caving into union pressure, Sir Keir had opened the floodgates to fresh pay demands from other public sector workers.”

…and so it begins…….

Anyone complaining about house prices, I would suggest you get your name on one sharpish because if you think you can’t afford one today, you definitely can’t afford one tomorrow…..

So it’s looking like most public sector workers are going to get double digit above inflation pay rises. This is standard Labour policy and as always will drive inflation through the roof. We saw all this in the 70’s, though many on here weren’t even born then. So get used to it guys, house prices will go through the roof, weekly shopping bills will be all over the place, the public sector will be well looked after and private sector employees will , as usual, pick up the bill. Anyway, enjoy….

The Tories wanted to keep the strikes running for political reasons. This is why they largely refused to negotiate, and why offers contained terms sand settlements they knew were unreasonable, and therefore unacceptable.

The aim was to craft a Thatcheresque, union busting, strong government narrative, while branding the then Labour opposition as pandering to their "union paymasters," as successive chilish boring Tory PMs put it.

None of that was pragmatic, or in the country's interests, but you know the saying party before country, well not anymore...

Thus must be scary witnessing a grown up Government in action. It will take time but I'm sure you will get used to it.

Sauce? No, I'm not mimicking @Kurt. by making accusations about your sobriety, or lack of.

Aha!

I thought it was suspicious the sauce was hidden! Maybe because we all know it's from the Newspaper that actively campaigned for unfunded tax cuts under Truss, actively supported tax and NI changes which benefited the better off, constantly attacks the public sector on ideological grounds, and is currently running articles to advise readers how to stash their cash to avoid taxation under Labour.

The stuff of socialism.

What we MUST all keep in mind, is that the last Government pretty much tried to keep the line this loony infested tome demanded. Which obviously worked out well. Not sure the space of 6 weeks will have changed much in terms of the validity of their position.

How much does it cost when services are disrupted and staff can't be found or retained?

Tedious Telegraph producing the usual 'outrage' hyperbole and regurgitated poorly as much dispute was about working conditions rather than pay increases.

One of the rights they were being asked to give up was full time employment. They could be asked to go part time by an employer with no right of refusal. Another was an inability to have a say in their own working patterns.

So yes we've got grown ups in charge now who are saying no to the previous governments plan costing the taxpayer £1Bn to leave industrial disputes unresolved for their own political gain. No amount of right wing 'bendy banana' nonsense changes that.
