Seems they have abolished it but wont correct the issue retrospectively. It means it's a time bomb for a future tory scum government.
In effect the Tories did the right thing abolishing but left the PR mess & potential legal issues around those who had already received payouts with deductions for the Labour Gov to sort out.

Seemed like your initial take was it was a badly timed shambles of Labour’s making which was a bit confusing.

Can't imagine why they've targeted that demographic. Oldest, most cynical trick in the book. The inversion of the triple lock, if you like. No political gains to be had there, no siree.

I dont think reforming the winter fuel payment is unwarranted at all. My worry is it might be being rolled out in a clumsy way. There certainly some who don't need it and are bellyaching.

The vast majority of those receiving WFA neither asked for it nor need it. The issue is that those who actually do need it, but don’t quite qualify will be heavily punished. It’s unfair but is merely the opening shot against all pensioners. Next will be tax increases and national insurance etc etc, which will then hit an additional couple of million. It’s spiteful in my opinion, as it’s not as if these older people can just jump up and go back to work to earn enough money. Anyway say hello to all your mums, dads and grandparents…..

It's £300 a year; they can just cancel their Netflix subscriptions and grow their own veg to make up for it.

What a post this is. This is peak Pete debate. Demand someone else substantiate something he cannot substantiate himself, assert falsehood as established fact, diminish the subject by removing their status, close by accusing the other side of what you are doing yourself. Lots of dots for style.

Nice bit of ‘like’ farming, even if, as usual, you neither read the previous posts nor understood them….

Seems fair, if you are a Labour MP…..

Hey Pete I’ve had a search and I can’t find it , in 2022 the tories scrapped the warm homes discount scheme in relation to those on disability benefits meaning that 300,000 lost out straight away . Were you unaware , didn’t you not care or were you not seeking to make political capital then ?

Interestingly the then government did nothing then to assist those who missed out or try and see if they qualified for any other benefit . whereas the current government have actually written within theirs that they’re aware of the shortfalls of those applying for pension credit who actual qualify and are working with local authorities to ensure that’s rectified and then they’d still be awarded the payments.

The second bit is pure Telegraph Pete.

They've been actively promoting making pension contributions to avoid tax for the last year or so, which is obviously fantastic for their typically wealthy AB readers. Now they're working themselves into a lather.

Of course, what everyone is forgetting is that there are other possible mechanisms to support those who need it.

We already have the warm home discount scheme, which could potentially be expanded or uprated. Similarly the winter fuel allowance criteria may change.

It's early days, let's see what happens.

My other thoughtbis that the smart move for Tory/Reform pensioners is to start filling in YouGov polls indicating they'll vote Labour next election. Maybe even apologise for Brexit. Labour are clearly punishing those not in their core support.

…Labour are clearly punishing those not in their core support.

And that’s no way to run a country while pretending to be a caring political party. Maybe Starmer could ‘take the knee’ to support the elderly. He would be well advised to be careful, he didn’t ‘win’ the election as he didn’t really get more votes than Corbyn, the conservatives lost it because normal conservative voters refused to vote….
