Yes. So they can live in another home... a care home.

Why is that not right for wider society?
It's actually cheaper for folk to stay in their own household, with some support, than be put into a care home full time.

Sone folk do buy or rent apartments in assisted living facilities/retirement villages.

It is a really difficult and emotional issue. It truly gets to the heart of many contradictions in how people view the state having a role and the issue of 'self reliance'.

Folk are encouraged to own their own home. It's an asset. Security. Something to pass on to their kids. Our housing system is so messed up folk now see little other sensible option, economically, than buying. Which riles people up when they lose what they have due to illness.

Frankly, if we had a decent social housing/rental sector in this country I'd not be arsed about owning. It's a trap.

OK your Mum or Father get put in what I call a concrete coffin care home & your inheritance pays for it all - I think you would see it differently- plus when the funds run out they will expect you to pay .....

I have experienced this by the way with my Mother in law - the social services tell you nothing I asked it for the information in writing - got a rubbish reply in writing - the home told me we would be liable for payment when her money ran out - & you think that's fair ?

The social services just lied - every council is different - My auntie died & a £1800, 000 house her son got 18 grand as she died with dementia after being in a home for over ten years .... If she had cancer, she would have got the home free - under NHS continuous care - The NHS are reluctant to hand that out to any other illness in an old person ... tell me if that's fair ?
The point I was trying to make to the original poster who has been very clear over the years about his thoughts on government welfare and personal responsibility for the employed and unemployed. To then start crowing when pensioners get affected by their own government welfare is beyond the pale - especially given that we all know about his wealth. He's not shy about telling us all about that.

But all circumstances are different and the situation you describe isn't fair.

Renting houses is the future, I agree with that - if i was young I would not stay in the UK mate .... I would have used my trade abroad - Spain by all accounts as they look after pensioners ....

Flights to Switzerland are quite reasonable Joe.

How? Brexit makes this extremely difficult.

Didn't you vote for Brexit? So another example of pulling up the ladder behind you.

Renting is only the future if rents are somehow controlled. The rule of thumb used to be one third of salary to rent or mortgage, now it's more than half for the majority - and not sustainable.

They also tax more to pay for it l, in the EU and don't do Trident... The Magic Money tree reigns supreme in the UK.
Look the Tories illegally blew unfunded 9 billion on false NI cuts which favoured the very well paid - all she had to do because it was unfunded was to reverse it on April - 9 billion back straight away - I was a local Government Officer & you can use vernation which is taken money from another department to cover necessary cost - if you just invented 9 billion the person would be sacked & the fraud squad used OK -

How can you blame that - Covid has caused all this ATM - many of the public even children have long Covid ....

Not sure that will last, think they're encouraging greater use of workplace and private pensions. Plus they're apparently raising the retirement age, like us.

I think you'd need to nationalise and work there to get a pension. Well, maybe not when we were in the EU. But now, yes.

Leaving the UK ain't a bad shout tbf. I'm strongly considering leaving longer term. The wife wouldn't mind moving back to her home country and all being well I can get a visa/naturalise easily.

A Labour Government being nastier than the Tories? - Starmer - no austerity in my government it has taken 2 & 1/2 weeks .... affluent pensioners fair enough - the heating of gas Oil & Electric is going up in October by 10% mate
