Ones near the end of short sentences for daft crimes.

The male prison estate is almost at capacity. Like to the point there won't even be holding cells to put arrested people in before long. We're within a few hundred of that happening.

That's why they need to free up space.

The entire justice system, like everything else, is an absolute mess.

This, but they cannot just kick them out - they'll need support, probation officers and so on.

The justice system is in crisis because of cuts and idiotic policy. To fix it, money and serious thought are required.

Any figures on the levels of pollution caused by lithium mining,it's transportation to battery manufacturing facilities and then the batteries on to car plants and from there around the world to vehicle distribution networks?
Of course

Bruce, I always read your articles. However many of them address political or social issues, I.e air pollution on a north/south divide or deprived area basis. I am a fan of renewable energy in many of its forms, but it costs a great deal of money to provide the technology, infrastructure and capacity to make best use of it, and by throwing away the revenue generating opportunities from oil, gas and coal, which could pay for all of this, we are shooting ourselves in both feet. Imo……
Or the taxes from ULEZ, which you oppose, if I recall?

Of course

So that's a no then.Just ignore the pollution from mining, shipping, manufacturing batteries transport of cars around the planet and the end of life recycling of cars and batteries. So it's on with the child miners and the poisoned rivers. And fingers crossed it'll all come good, one day.

Around a third of the total "cost" of oil and gas is included in the actual price we pay. The social and environmental cost gets put onto us. I thought being a good socialist you'd be against that.

You'll hear no arguments from me about the need to massively improve the supply chain. How people in the DRC and so on are treated is absolutely appalling. No question at all. Similarly, we need to get better at managing the lifecycle of the batteries. I don't think anyone would say that batteries are without externalities, but the point is that those costs are lower than with fossil fuels.

I was looking for the total emissions for the full process from mine to showroom then complete recycle for an average EV. I couldn't find any complete information, which to be honest didn't surprise me. If you have a link I'd be obligated if you could post it. I do see the merit in the effort, but honestly think we are past the tipping point already.

Thanks but I'm looking for the complete process. That includes mining, sea transport of raw materials as well as completed battery packs, car parts then the complete vehicle in the showroom. But we are getting wildly off topic.

Don't forget the workers and their environmental impact, cigarettes smoked, beers chugged, hours of tv watched, shoe leather worn out, donner meat kebabs consumed.

It all adds up.

Yes, I do oppose them. I don’t live or even visit London, but that arbitrary tax is purely for the vanity of the Mayor and will be wasted along with the rest of his money making schemes. Of course you live in London, no idea if you drive being a cyclist, but if you are happy with being ripped off who am I to disagree….

I know you are a specialist in being wrong, but on this you have excelled yourself.

ULEZ is that rare thing in modern British politics - a policy that has actually delivered more benefits than it promised. Air quality is improved, far fewer people have to pay it than the liars claimed would, and we are already seeing improvements in public health.

A bar, the smoking ban, the good old days.

Come on!
