I see that idiot Miliband has stated that no new licenses will be issues for oil or gas extraction in the North Sea. Now putting aside the fact that the companies involved will obviously take him and the government to court, where does he believe our oil and gas will come from ? He’s going to cost the country Billions…….

….my understanding is that nearly all of North Sea oil is managed by foreign companies and ends up on the continent.

Regardless, the aim is to transition from fossil fuel, I understand the pipe work and infrastructure can be re-used for this purpose. These plans were communicated clearly in the lead up to the GE and I now don’t see many Scottish Conservative MPs. It’s called progression.

Nothing has been handed to anyone. The Multinational oil companies have spent millions putting together bids for licenses as I understand it, but idiot Miliband has just declared that none will be issued…..don’t defend the indefensible.

If this was the Green Party doing it, I could understand as they are raving nutters, but from a government that needs money to just throw away our natural resources is stupid in the extreme. The USA, Russia, China, Saudi, Iran etc etc will just sit back knowing that we will be buying from them, and causing much greater harm to the environment, as a result. Why not use what we have and invest the money in new green technology instead of just throwing it away…..
I'm sure I recall it was said that when energy prices were rocketing that the North Sea was irrelevant because it all went onto international markets at a price determined by the market. Maybe time to sell your gas guzzling Land Rover Pete.

Should I change it to an electricity guzzling vehicle. Now if only we knew the sources of electricity generation in the U.K. and how much we would need if everyone went electric. Sorry I’m being flippant. However, while we are being a lovely shade of green, having already given up on our vast coal resources, now we will do it with oil and gas, and we can sit back and smugly look at all of these other countries digging coal, pumping out gas and oil, and with a superior air let them know we have single handedly saved the planet…god bless the U.K…pass me another bacon butty……

You do realise that we get paid for this…..

So, because everyone* else is an arsonist, the uk must be?

'I'm alright Jack' toryism whataboutery at it's worst. Why can't you see that You are the problem?

I don't know why I bother really as I've shared studies like this with you so many times and I'm almost certain you don't bother to read them, much less take them in,,,

It's also worth pointing out that much of Europe now has a glut of renewable energy, and a problem is where to store it. If only we had, oh, I dunno, a battery with four wheels on that isn't used for large chunks of the day...

Look beyond politics if you can. We still use, oil, gas and coal, the difference being that this will now be imported, on oil burning ships from countries mostly ruled by dictators. All we are doing is pretending to reduce our dependence on these fuels by exporting responsibility to other countries while simultaneously costing the country a fortune. If you cannot see this then perhaps it is you who is the problem……

Bruce, I always read your articles. However many of them address political or social issues, I.e air pollution on a north/south divide or deprived area basis. I am a fan of renewable energy in many of its forms, but it costs a great deal of money to provide the technology, infrastructure and capacity to make best use of it, and by throwing away the revenue generating opportunities from oil, gas and coal, which could pay for all of this, we are shooting ourselves in both feet. Imo……

Interesting article in the economist there. That project in Finland sounds incredible. I wonder if we could see more localised initiatives such as that.

Any figures on the levels of pollution caused by lithium mining,it's transportation to battery manufacturing facilities and then the batteries on to car plants and from there around the world to vehicle distribution networks?

The square root of a potato. Yes potato's are technically tubers and not square, but the roots they produce create complex subterranean networks. These root systems are further advanced by fine hairs that increase the potato's ability to absorb nutrients.

Releasing 1000 prisoners due to a fear of a 'breakdown in law and order'.
Interesting concept.

God bless.
Ones near the end of short sentences for daft crimes.

The male prison estate is almost at capacity. Like to the point there won't even be holding cells to put arrested people in before long. We're within a few hundred of that happening.

That's why they need to free up space.

The entire justice system, like everything else, is an absolute mess.
