Blimey, that plonker Rodney Starmer's gone and parked his tanks so far to the right he's on the EDL's lawn.

Not really something that bothers me one way or the other, I think it shows a huge amount of confidence. There's nothing inherently wrong with patriotism, as long as it's actual support for the country and not just performative flagshagging for votes... such as wearing Union Jack socks on a zipline etc.

What does "support for our country" even mean?

Well I wasn't trying to be too specific because I was talking about patriotism in very broad terms, but if you want examples that relate to the recent political era of the UK then it would be a government that made decisions primarily for the general betterment of the British people, rather than flag-waving stunts for crass electioneering purposes, internal party management or simply for their own base personal enrichment.

Basically for me, patriotism involves actually working towards things that improve the lives of the population. For a lot of people that weaponise the term, it means (being seen to be) belting out the anthem, waving the flag and then doing the exact opposite.

I do understand that there will always be honest differences of opinion in what policies will achieve that for any given nation at any given moment in history, and that any party in power can make mistakes, however well-intentioned.

There will lots going behind scenes that is not for electioneering purposes. No doubt Starmer will already be chatting to the EU behind the scenes for the betterment of the entire Kingdom. He is after all the Prime Minister elect and they know that and I'm quite sure there will be all kinds of discussions about ways forward on a number of potential issues.

I'm seriously not concerned right now about what Labour are saying about Flags or not saying tomorrow on whatever the Tory client media decides is an issue. And I doubt the electorate feel much different as polling certainly backs that assertion .

Yes. Literally said it 5 posts back.

I've admitted this already Why does that bother you, if i say it enough do become Green Party member or something?

And do you think Labour or any other Party in center or left gets a fair reporting from the British media?
Firstly, I believe this is a place for discussion and as such i'm interested to know whether there is any thing whatsoever that underpins your faith in the current Labour party, or whether it's a vacuous impulse, just like 'Get Brexit done', that's going to lead to a similar lack of concrete mandate and another authoritarian government with a majority flooded by hand chosen wannabe yes-men that continue to implement policy for a minority at the expense of the rest because 'they know what's best'.

You're too scared to look at their history aren't you ? @tsubaki

Anyone who votes Labour these days needs watching.

That Telegraph article is dog whistle racism.

He's embraced the politics of Der Volk.

The one thing that gives me a bit of hope generally with regards to the LP is that these hand chosen wannabe yes-men are so bad at politics, and have so little actual base to them (in terms of popular support inside or outside the party, and a complete lack of intellectual coherence / confidence) that they could probably be removed from power quite quickly before they do too much damage. That clique at the top contains no person of actual note, in terms of having demonstrable ability never mind their own following within the wider party or public at large - these are really politically insecure people. Of the rest of the SC there is only really Rayner and Miliband who could be said to have a bit more about them, and then beyond that there are a few in the PLP who would clearly do a better job than the clique (Rosena Allin-Khan probably being the best example but there are others).

Corbyn managed to remove from the top of the party a much stronger lot that and they were not already horrifically compromised over Gaza or their war against their own party membership, so once a more able leader can be found this shower will probably be swept away quickly and then the work of fixing the country can begin.

murdoch's hyenas are already setting the table for this. Having pilloried may, johnson, truss and sunak, the media scum can't wait to dole out a witch hunt like they did Corbyn just for the sake of some perverted idea of even handedness.
