I feel sorry for Hoyle, he always seemed an honest and honourable person. He still is, but allowing Starmer to pull a stunt like that and effectively being bullied is not what is needed from a Speaker. I fear he will be put under massive pressure to resign. Parliament just went the same way as our trident missile heaping more embarrassment onto the U.K……
Would it surprise you to know that his father, Doug, was a founder of 'Labour Friends of Israel'?
If you look for a unifying reason that would involve Labour, Starmer and the Speaker, I've saved you the trouble. The now 'motive' is a tried and tested method of 'sympathy gathering deflection' used many, many times by Likud.

Sorry, did I say Likud? I meant Labour.

Its not a good reflection to be fair. The Labour amendment encompassed all that the SNP wanted, and more. Few could argue against what Labour was calling for as it was all very reasonable and entirely in line with stopping the suffering now and into the future. The Labour amendment is far more comprehensive, balanced and reasonable but also presses for statehood. In short, very professional - the SNP version looks amateurish sorry to say. In allowing the Labour one to go ahead as there’s far more “meat on the bone” and it’s less controversially phrased, think if i was far left populist this was the hope, to cause trouble. The speaker made the right call for once.

SNP motion

That this House calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel; notes with shock and distress that the death toll has now risen beyond 28,000, the vast majority of whom were women and children; further notes that there are currently 1.5 million Palestinians sheltering in Rafah, 610,000 of whom are children; also notes that they have nowhere else to go; condemns any military assault on what is now the largest refugee camp in the world; further calls for the immediate release of all hostages taken by Hamas and an end to the collective punishment of the Palestinian people; and recognises that the only way to stop the slaughter of innocent civilians is to press for a ceasefire now.

Labour amendment

That this House believes that an Israeli ground offensive in Rafah risks catastrophic humanitarian consequences and therefore must not take place; notes the intolerable loss of Palestinian life, the majority being women and children; condemns the terrorism of Hamas who continue to hold hostages; supports Australia, Canada and New Zealand’s calls for Hamas to release and return all hostages and for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, which means an immediate stop to the fighting and a ceasefire that lasts and is observed by all sides, noting that Israel cannot be expected to cease fighting if Hamas continues with violence and that Israelis have the right to the assurance that the horror of 7 October 2023 cannot happen again; therefore supports diplomatic mediation efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire; demands that rapid and unimpeded humanitarian relief is provided in Gaza; further demands an end to settlement expansion and violence; urges Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice’s provisional measures; calls for the UN Security Council to meet urgently; and urges all international partners to work together to establish a diplomatic process to deliver the peace of a two-state solution, with a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state, including working with international partners to recognise a Palestinian state as a contribution to rather than outcome of that process, because statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people and not in the gift of any neighbour.
And yet, despite all that waffle, Starmer was terrified of a rebellion amongst his own, which, possibly, could have put serious pressure on him.
In light of the 'fear of terrorism' revelations, I am almost certain that information would have had to be shared with the government, which would have prevented that fiasco last night, or at least damped it down.
There is no working democratic process left in the mother of all parliaments, it really has been taken over by Likud.

Sorry, did I say Likud? I mean lunatics. Hey-ho...

That performance by the mother of all parliaments gives me no faith to vote - they are about as useful as a trident missile- Putin must be shaking in his boots :)- plus whats happening in Isreal is a disgrace do you really think a vote from those idiots who sell weapons to them - asking for a rightful ceasefire Isreal would listen ?
Maybe Lord Cameron should just stop our arms deall with them & send them to UKRAINE l

This new Labour lot treat honest agriculturalists with total disdain, they don't understand the real world and will throw everyone under the bus trying to appeal to the radical urban centrists with their Costa coffee lifestyles. Reminds me a lot of Stalin tbh and what he did to farmers. They might not want an equal society at all costs, but I could already feel their jackboots closing in on my neck as I was weeding earlier.

Ploughing rubbish again lol

Hoyle was a guest of the Israeli government in the wake of the atrocities of 7th October.

An SNP lady said it all for me. It was an SNP motion day, Labour have had lots of them and not brought up Gaza. It’s normal for the Government to put up an amendment. But somehow not only did Hoyle allow 2 amendments, against convention (and he may have done it for the right reasons) but even worse the Labour one would have been voted on first, thereby turning an SNP day into a Labour day vote. No wonder the SNP were up in arms…..

This is one of those rare moments where I agree with you Pete.
