Looks like Hoyle was given credible evidence of death threats to MPs hence is action yesterday. Oh dear oh dear fancy jumping on this for political games.

From Guardian Blog-

From The Guardian Live Blog:

Hoyle apologises to SNP, offers to let them hold emergency debate, but defends wanting to protect MPs
Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the speaker, is responding to Flynn.

He says he made a judgment call that did not end up where he expected. He regrets it. He apologises to the SNP. He has made a mistake. He says he will allow an emergency debate under standing order 24 on this.

He will defend all MPs, he says.

He says he never ever wants to pick up a folder to pick up a note about an MP being murdered.

He says he has been shown material that is “absolutely frightening” about the threats to MPs.

And if his mistake is to look after MPs, he is guilty. He has a duty to protect people, he says.

All MPs are at risk, he says. He had serious meetings with the police yesterday. Heading into the election, there are threats.

He repeats the point that he is offering an SO24 debate.
Bless. Thousands have actually died and are about to die in Gaza. Any MP receiving a death threat will get far more police and intelligence resource than anyone else would, and lest we forget, that chamber has made and will make decisions that place other people's lives in jeopardy frequently. Absolute cowards.

This is it in a nutshell, they are happy to vote on other people's life and death but don't like it when their voting comes back at them, this morning an mp wants the entire met force to catch someone who threw an egg at him, majority of mps are leeches.

And there we have it no care for all life, its the nuts and bolts of it now.
Says you arguing about the terms of calling for ceasefire and how its come about. And its actually 29300 from this morning according the Palestinian health authority

I feel sorry for Hoyle, he always seemed an honest and honourable person. He still is, but allowing Starmer to pull a stunt like that and effectively being bullied is not what is needed from a Speaker. I fear he will be put under massive pressure to resign. Parliament just went the same way as our trident missile heaping more embarrassment onto the U.K……

Seems totally out of his depth to me, like a supply teacher in that he is unwilling to confront clear attempts to undermine him and the chamber.

are you deluded or dumb?
the only way these self-important ahole MPs can do anything to stop the murdering is stop selling UK weapons to Israel.
the pathetic performance yesterday has zero effect on the Palestinians lives.

How very dare you misrepresent what was fairly clearly presented. I suppose if that's all you have...

For the sake of clarity: What is the HoC worth if a few words on X bring it to a grinding halt? They'll have plenty of protection and help, unlike the people and aid workers in Gaza. I obviously do care about life, but the risk to MPs ought to be minimal.

It’s my honest reflection.

Its not a good reflection to be fair. The Labour amendment encompassed all that the SNP wanted, and more. Few could argue against what Labour was calling for as it was all very reasonable and entirely in line with stopping the suffering now and into the future. The Labour amendment is far more comprehensive, balanced and reasonable but also presses for statehood. In short, very professional - the SNP version looks amateurish sorry to say. In allowing the Labour one to go ahead as there’s far more “meat on the bone” and it’s less controversially phrased, think if i was far left populist this was the hope, to cause trouble. The speaker made the right call for once.

SNP motion

That this House calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Israel; notes with shock and distress that the death toll has now risen beyond 28,000, the vast majority of whom were women and children; further notes that there are currently 1.5 million Palestinians sheltering in Rafah, 610,000 of whom are children; also notes that they have nowhere else to go; condemns any military assault on what is now the largest refugee camp in the world; further calls for the immediate release of all hostages taken by Hamas and an end to the collective punishment of the Palestinian people; and recognises that the only way to stop the slaughter of innocent civilians is to press for a ceasefire now.

Labour amendment

That this House believes that an Israeli ground offensive in Rafah risks catastrophic humanitarian consequences and therefore must not take place; notes the intolerable loss of Palestinian life, the majority being women and children; condemns the terrorism of Hamas who continue to hold hostages; supports Australia, Canada and New Zealand’s calls for Hamas to release and return all hostages and for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, which means an immediate stop to the fighting and a ceasefire that lasts and is observed by all sides, noting that Israel cannot be expected to cease fighting if Hamas continues with violence and that Israelis have the right to the assurance that the horror of 7 October 2023 cannot happen again; therefore supports diplomatic mediation efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire; demands that rapid and unimpeded humanitarian relief is provided in Gaza; further demands an end to settlement expansion and violence; urges Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice’s provisional measures; calls for the UN Security Council to meet urgently; and urges all international partners to work together to establish a diplomatic process to deliver the peace of a two-state solution, with a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state, including working with international partners to recognise a Palestinian state as a contribution to rather than outcome of that process, because statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people and not in the gift of any neighbour.

Holye clearly referenced Amiss and Cox deaths last night in his response in what he he did. I have mentioned this a few times. You clearly tried to make light of it I accept it was not directed at them or others but attempt to goad me. Still its bad taste to be honest.

Whether it is good or not is merely a matter of unqualified opinion but at least now we appear to agree that my reflection was not dishonest, as you implied.
Either way, the lengthy word salad of any and all of the motions did and will do nothing for the people of Gaza and arguing which was the most appropriate shade of beige does nothing either.

I'm not making light of anything. There's been multiple online 'safety' bills, hundreds of hours devoted to their own online safety in the HoC and billions spent equipping the police and intelligence services to deal with such things. IMO it should not be a sufficient reason to disrupt the HoC.
