All labour will do if they continue on this track is usher in an even worse tory government in five years time.

The warning signs are all there with what's happening in the states.

This is why they need holding to account. Defending them blindly like we see a lot on here will achieve nothing but a far right tory government in the long term.

The same people helped usher in this current tory government.

100% - they’ll actively boost the Tory loons as well because they think it will leave “normal people” with no one else to vote for.

Among Labour members that come into life, there is absolutely no appetite for a change of leader. I've not heard anyone suggest that Starmer needs to go.

Even those on the left who, like myself would like to see a much more radical approach from the leadership, recognise that his measured approach is what's needed now, in order not to leave the press with an open goal or make promises that may prove impossible to keep given the horrendous damage that has been inflicted on public services and the huge cost of putting that right.

Well in on standing for absolutely nothing Sir Kier! He’s playing a blinder here!

The problem is who is advising him, not necessarily him. They are both crap and are snakes; listening to them and letting them purge their enemies will result in a disaster.

….the handling of this £28bn green policy has been a huge gaff. Reporters have known for weeks that the policy is getting pulled, yet shadow ministers have been doing the rounds preaching contrary. It should’ve been nipped in the bud and communicated long ago, they’ll be hoping this will be forgotten at GE time.
It's perhaps worth remembering that inequality/levelling up goes hand in hand with net zero and a cleaner environment. Too often we look at them as separate issues, or worse, allow right wing nut jobs to project protecting the planet as harming the worst off.

The leadership team need to stand shoulder to shoulder and not allow tory attacks to split them. It is the last leg of the race and they need to control the narrative from here on in.

I kind of disagree.

He could have waited until after the election and then declared a change in policy which would have made them look even more disingenuous.

By stating the economic reasons why they have changed policy, interest rates and the fallout from the disastrous Truss mini budget, that’s a further reminder as to how bad the Government have been.

Think there’s a massive over reaction to this personally mainly for point scoring exercises.

Why announce it in the first place then? Was only 3 years ago that they launched this. Is the economy in a worse place since then?
Think it’s pretty difficult to sugarcoat this as anything other than a shift away from Green initiatives and priorities.

I think this a reaction to the incoming public sector cuts and tax giveaways the Tories are planning.

In the next budget, the Tories will do a big tax cut, funded by public sector cuts, leaving a Labour Government in the position of either having to borrow, raise taxes or accept decimated public services, all of which they’ll then be attacked for.

The Tories know they’re done for, so the strategy is to tie Labour down fiscally, and attack them on that basis.

That’s fair enough. Think it would have been better to announce after the budget in that case.

Yeah, maybe. The last budget did some of that work, with the NI cuts, and it’s pretty common knowledge that the next budget intends to cripple our finances for years. Think the reason Labour announced it now is they’ve just had the deadline for finalising their manifesto, so don’t want to over promise.

People need to understand just how badly the Tories have crippled the country, and intend to do it more so for political reasons. The next government is gonna have a tough job, and nothing is quickly fixable.

Well yes.

You miss the 35bn Truss took out of the treasury?

As to why announce it in the first place, well that was the plan then, due to the economics they are saying it’s not possible anymore.

I’m struggling to comprehend what’s hard for people to understand about that to be honest.

So at best it was a badly thought out and planned policy proposal?
