Current Affairs The Labour Party

A new YouGov survey finds that 42 per cent of 2019 Labour voters think that Sir Keir has badly handled his response to Israel-Hamas conflict.

Only 26 per cent think Mr Starmer – who has refused to support a ceasefire despite backing from a revolt by dozens of MPs and the party’s devolved leaders – has handled it well.

One Labour MP said Mr Starmer had made a “catastrophic decision” to stick with Israel “unconditionally” – arguing that it had alienated millions of voters. “He’s got himself into a serious mess.”

The backbencher told The Independent: “There is an existential threat to a lot of Labour seats with a large number of Muslims voters. I know it’s about a humanitarian disaster – but people do count numbers are worry about their seats. There are MPs on the right of the party and soft left who are very uneasy.”

They added: “A wide group are really, really unhappy. I would say around 100 MPs [want a ceasefire]. The numbers are moving away from him quite rapidly. So I can’t see how the position will hold, especially if there’s wider escalation in the conflict.”

Labour MP Khalid Mahmood, who helped organise a meeting between Sir Keir and Muslim MPs this week, said: “I certainly hope Keir does [back a ceasefire]. We had a very productive meeting. We were heard, we’re now in dialogue. That’s positive.”

While 49 MPs have gone public with their support for a ceasefire, many more are believed to be unhappy – and four shadow cabinet ministers are reportedly on resignation watch as the leadership battles to shore up support for the position.

“I think there is more [than 49 MPs] who want that [ceasefire],” said Mr Mahmood. “We have to deal with the scourge of Hamas, but the only way we can deal with it is by having a ceasefire that allows aid in.”

Another Labour MP added: “It’s not just the left – it’s far more than 49 MPs who are frustrated about the position. But I fear they will be people around Starmer telling him he needs to stick to backing the US and Israel, telling him he has to be willing to burn our base.”

I'll tell you what I see as very sinister in this revolt against Starmer over his backing of the Gaza massacre: many or most of those resigning from the 'Labour' Party or coming out backing a ceasefire are Muslim. That'll leave some bitterness in the ranks.

If this was the anti-semitism BS, right across that party the cowards would be falling over each other demanding anyone or any leader be censured or replaced for backing anything to the detriment of Israel, it's apologists or its causes. The turds are keeping their heads down fearful they'll be targeted by a zionist group and / or Starmer's henchmen in the party.

Hopefully Starmer - hiding away and hoping it'll all go away like the 'kin coward he is - will pay a hefty price for this. Babies getting pulled out of the rubble dead or alive and a people living in darkness like a medieval siege upon them...which it is...deserted by the 'Labour' leadership.

Goddamn you Starmer, you filthy murderer's handmaiden.

I'm not sure that the majority of Labour inclined voters are heavily invested in the debate. More the left of left.

That said, the current abomination should rally all sides.

He will get away with it for the most part on this subject. As long as he more or less treads the same direction, that is Hamas bad and Israel must be allowed to defend itself. Basically stick to American line... If he went near a Corbyn principle on this he would be brought down before election. r
Anyone believe our PM or main opposistion leader can actually influence matters in this conflict is frankly deluded.

Yeah, what I'm saying is that in all my decades of living in Liverpool, Palestine has never been a topic that I've been engaged with or heard. It most likely will come up I'm sure due to the current atrocities. I think it's fair to say that it has been a fringe, activist passion.

Hamas actions have brought it to the front though. Where thar leads F knows, but it Gaza is clearly now a pawn in a much wider game.

Much of the wider electorate don't care.
That's not the point:

1/ there's enough seats where angry Muslim voters can mean a defeat for 'Labour'

2/ any LP worthy of the name should be leading the way with outrage over this slaughter...but this Starmer scum are dismissing that as 'virtue signalling'. Can you imagine that? THAT is how far Starmer's lot have taken that party from its core values

I think your problem, Dave, is that you are a Communist with National Social tendencies, innit. The vast majority will never see the world from a segment perspective, IMO.
