The truth is that whoever wins the next election will face a daunting task, since the state's finances are more or less in ruins thanks to a combination of Brexit and Tory incompetence/corruption.
Wasn't sustainable though, was it? They did a hell of a lot wrong, too.And we never had it so good as we did under Blair.
What public services and our wee pockets would give to have had new labour in charge this past decade.
I wouldn't say they're centre left at the moment.….they will rightly have a centre left manifesto and will concentrate 5 years on righting public services. There won’t be a lurch to the left because Starmer knows that will mean he remains for one term only.
Saying that, nationalising British Rail and utility companies in the 2nd term could resonate with centrists. The Labour Party needs to carry Tory voters with them and winning seats off SNP will be a real dependency to winning a majority.

….moot point. Conservatives want smaller Government, Labour want to invest in public services. I’d say they are centre left.
Most left wing policies are etremely popular, if many could be instigated without the headline image of them being left wing then they could be very successful. It's unfortunate that these things have to be considered but the media and governments leap to the far right means a difficult balancing act publicly….they will rightly have a centre left manifesto and will concentrate 5 years on righting public services. The blinkers are off for me mate. I'm trying to help others see further down the road to what a 'Labour' government under Starmer looks like. He isn't telling any lies when he says there'll be no big changes in public spending, he;s not telling any lies in saying the rich won't be taxed more, he's not telling any lies when he says that local authorities will be opened up more for tenders from the private sector...or the NHS further opened up to the private sector.
Wake up, this is not a sea change. Yes, it might be nice to see the Tories taking a beating, but after that comes more of the same politics of despair.

I tell my missus and kids, they MUST vote. Whoever they fancy if they have no idea but they must use their opportunity to vote! Otherwise they may as well live in North Korea..The appallingly low turnout in these by elections does leave a big query about the significance of the results.
2/3 of the electorate seem to have abandoned politics.
Ladies and Gentlemen, CLASSIC NOSTRADAVEK!
Fixed as well. I'd put a tenner on that folks![]()
+ lol + Yes. My point is that people are deserting the Tories in swathes but there's not a desire to flock to Starmer's party.Isn't that due to turnout? Their vote share.went up...by elections are always weird anyway
With respect: that's fantasy. After 13 years of Tory’s decimating public services I’ve far more confidence in a Labour govt trying to correct that, but the state they are going to leave the country in means that it’s a long term job and that needs to be remembered.
So sure, I get that there is not going to be any overnight fix, I’m grown up enough to realise that’s not possible.
I’m a firm believer and hopeful that Starmer is saying the things he needs to in order to convince the public to make the change. Once in, let’s see how and what they do.
weren't you calling labour the new tories? make yer mind up will yer!Yes. My point is that people are deserting the Tories in swathes but there's not a desire to flock to Starmer's party.
They are uninspiring. There's no question about that. Its a case now of anyone but the Tories.
They can make matters worse too. I actually think they will...and they'll sicken people on Labour for a few generations to come.Obviously, but they've gotta be a better option right now than those in power currently!
How?They can make matters worse
One thing we can count on: Patterson won't be anywhere near a game tomorrow apart from warming a bench.….poor Dave’s world is falling apart.
Lets hope Patterson has a stormer tomorrow![]()
