Seeing Gordon Brown speak tomorrow night. Is he real Labour or a Blairite charlatan? I need the Dave seal of approval so I know whether to boo or cheer.

I like him. Kept Blair in check, brought millions out of poverty whilst showing Labour could be trusted with the economy.

Perfect balance of traditional Labour values whilst realising the need to modernise.

Oh and he was right to call that woman a bigot

"No criticising Israel".

The 'Labour' Party are now heavily influenced by many MPs involved in the Friends of Israel Group.

Expect zero condemnation of any attacks on Palestinians and Israeli land grabs on their land..but plenty of attacks on other invasions...

The so called Labour Party is a right wing cesspit.

Avoid at all costs.

A must watch, especially for anyone thinking things will be any better under tory continuity candidate liar starmer

Oborne is merciless when he sees corruption and lies.

"The candidate of MI6 and MI5."

Quite.

The poor chumps voting for him and expecting even a marginally better difference to their lives will be the ones in 2 years time who'll be in a frenzy denouncing him. Mark my words.

A neoliberal who'll take 'Labour' even further to the right to replace the Tories. That's his historic mission.

People seem to be getting confused here. We're what, 18 months out from an election with zero chance of Starmer getting dethroned in that time, so he is literally the only realistic alternative to a Tory government of Sunak, Braverman et al continuing with what they're doing. That's the reality of the matter. People saying he's not really for them makes it all the more likely that Sunak will win another term because that's the system we have.

He was a terrible chancellor and a worse PM - he could have modernised much more cheaply, and with greater impact, if he'd not expanded the Tory policies of PFI and other public-private partnerships.

Even when events forced him to do something (such as the collapse of Railtrack after Hatfield) he deliberately chose an inefficient way that has resulted in ballooning debt and was done illegally anyway. If he'd been more left wing and more competent, we would live in a much better country now.

The Labour Party died when it knifed Corbyn in the back and paved the way for Johnson imo

Starmer being voted in by the same people who voted Corbyn in is probably the single worst act of self-immolation there's been on the left of British politics.

The left of centre members voted in a man who is dedicated to making the LP the Tory Party.

So Brown was surprisingly entertaining. He's written a book with a couple of economists, and while their diagnosis of the problem seems spot on, their solutions do seem to involve new (or reformed) global institutions. I do wonder how likely that is when nationalism is on the rise, due in large part to the declining trust in democracy itself. Not that I disagree with the suggestion, but you've got a bunch of nations who don't really care about those things, and a seeming declining interest in them among those who should. Seems to be putting the cart before the horse a bit. It's also moderately worrying that he wrote a previous book on "how to fix the world" a couple of years ago. I do hope he's not developing a bit of a god complex.

Amazon product ASIN 1398525618 is the book.
