This EU thing: Starmer has got himself and his party into a terrible mess over it.

From the Guardian:

The Tories have accused Keir Starmer of flip-flopping over the EU following claims Labour wants to effectively undo Brexit.

The Labour leader made a speech on Thursday where he outlined his vision of a future UK relationship with the EU, saying Labour didn’t “want to diverge”.

The Labour leader was speaking at an event in Canada bringing together liberal and centre-left politicians, where he said that “most of the conflict” since Brexit had arisen because the UK “wants to diverge and do different things to the rest of our EU partners”.

Speaking on GB News on Friday morning, the environment minister, Mark Spencer, accused Labour of obsessing over Brexit and said Starmer seems to make policy up “on the hoof”.

He said:

Spencer added that we have got to acknowledge democracy happened and that the country voted to leave the EU.

He continued:

I mean, I'm a socialist so I don't give a flying one what happens to him and his lot, but is he trying to grab defeat from the jaws of victory...
That Spencer guy is using one of the Brexit lies there talking about borders and free movement. You can have free movement and still control your borders, exactly as we did when we were in the EU. Incredible people still fall for this rubbish.

Yet if you actually listen to what he said, he was very clear in saying he dosent want to lower standards. At no point did he mention rejoining, he even acknowledged we are out.

Of course it's rubbish. The whole gammon agenda the Tory Party mobilised the feeble minded was rubbish. But that's not the issue here. Starmer cranking up a long dead debate is....

I'd also like to see where on the ballot paper it said we could, or could not, diverge from European standards (or for that matter couldn't join a customs union).

He hasn't cranked up a debate though.
He simply said he doesn't want to move away from established standards.
I am no Starmer apologist, but he hasn't started anything here. This is just certain media clamouring for a headline that isn't there, and tories playing the race/brexit card.

At least we now know what he stands for, regarding this subject.

Pfffft!

Starmer has clearly used the last week to highlight clear blue water between his lot's relationship with the EU and that of the Tory's.

It was a major blunder...one that he's having to be extricated from by his own shadow ministers.

For some reason only known to Starmer he's started this EU relationship issue up again. Probably because he's a puppet of Mandelson.

And yet he has come out today and stated there is no case for rejoining the EU I think that makes his stance clear.
On a lesser note even the lib dems have today stated they don't think people really care about the brexit topic anymore.
You can tell that by the reaction on social media. There isnt one.
It's a non story. Well to those who are not right wing zealots.

Yes, he's had to walk it back.

Anyone hoping that this lot are going to tackle and roll back austerity should watch the CH4 news interview Starmer and Reeve gave last night.

There will be no attempt made to make up the gap of cuts under 'Labour'. The notion that a windfall tax raising £11B can even touch the sides of inequality is laughable.

The stuff they came out with could have come from the mouths of Cameron and Osborne 14 years ago...in fact Osborne has praised them for their plans.
