OK, our lack of clean sheets may have been a combination of Howard and the incontinent Distin, and Joel has a young and regular Stones instead to keep those sheets crisply white, but Joel is only going to get better as long as he plays, and his lapses (like coming out to meet Sterling) don't tend to lead to goals. Furthermore, keeping the opposition out builds confidence that could be damaged if a keeper with a shaky recent history returns to the starting XI.
