That's because the Finnish properly train and reward their teachers (and other education professionals) throughout their careers and - wait for it - they trust them to lead the education system forwards instead of having politicians constantly interfering according to whatever their latest whim is.

Isn't that what free schools are about? Getting bods from the local authority out of the way and letting the schools themselves govern their own affairs?

Incidentally, is it to maudlin to suggest Labour might be hoping for the usual 'winter NHS health crisis' to kick in a bit early so they can use lots of OAPs snuffing it to score a few points?

.....the number of ‘street interviews’ I’ve already seen where voters say they won’t vote Labour because they don’t like Corbyn.

Whilst I’m amazed the Labour Party went into this election with a Corbyn millstone around their neck, I’m equally amazed folk in northern cities can vote Johnson. The state of British politics that these two lead our main parties.

The bill. Big infrastructure projects like Hinkley C or the Thames Supersewer are only possible with either government support or government guarantees.

Local authorities don't determine what is taught and how schools are inspected - specifically the inspection framework, nor do they write the various laws and acts relating to education, schools, teaching and teachers. Central government does these things and controls the purse strings.
