Just by smiling, Saffiyah Khan has actually made that EDL knuckledragger look like an even bigger mug than he was in the first place.

She wasn't just smiling though..in her own words in a BBC interview, "But I did a fair bit of shouting too - I'm under no delusion about that"

This is a typical case of an EDL v UAF demo..... racist thugs Vrs violent thugs.

She is no hero. A small number of EDL supporters were contained, controlled and surrounded by Police. They are confronted by UAF members who broke through police lines and scuffles broke out. She had no need to be there other than to be confrontational. Nice photo for the press, but video's are starting to emerge now that show the situation in more depth. Interestingly, two arrests were made, both of whom were 'counter protestors'. And there is footage of Miss Kahn being physically manhandled away from the protest by the police. That doesn't normally happen just for smiling does it?

The EDL is on it's last legs. Every demonstration now seems to have less support than the one before. Give it a year or two and it won't exist. Surely it's now best just to ignore them as the irrelevance that they are and they'll disappear a lot faster! They are thugs and hooligans who no doubt enjoy the aggro and confrontation that these protests attract. Take that attraction away by ignoring them, not turning up at these protests, and they'll get bored. Sadly, the counter protestors won't let that happen as they enjoy the confrontations and the violence just as much as the EDL do.

It makes me angry that we have to waste valuable and scarce police resources policing these events.

Your post assumes that the EDL aren't violent, when they use and encourage violence in many of their 'protests'. Counter protesting fascism is important.

Think your missing his point seanjd without the counter demo , they would have as much relavence as a group of loons handing out pamphlets saying the world is about to end next week.
Think about it 30 people nobody reacting , it would soon become boring for those involved.

I understand that, but feel uneasy that it violent, right wing extremism should go unchallenged.

They aren't worth the bother , the more they speak the sooner people see them for what they are, the British people are to middle of the road to get behind the far right or left, both of which i have no time for.

The best thing to do against vermin like the EDL is to treat them as the worthless nothing's they are. It's very dangerous to casts these far right groups as being idiots who will have no sway on anybody. The political world is very turbulent at the moment, and you don't need to look further than Europe to see that. Parties with beliefs not too dissimilar to the EDL could well be elected in both France and the Netherlands.

I don't believe either of the right-wing party's will win in either France or the Netherlands but I think you give the EDL far more (for want of a better word) credit then they deserve to even be compared to either of those groups. Show up at anything they deem not the right way of thinking , be it in Uni's on social media on TV and it's let's shut it down or not allow it, if we don't agree.
Trump coming here for example, they are all over the social media or having a demo
put there views to a ballot and they wouldn't win a thing in the UK, but they think they have the right to impose there values and ideas on the population without any mandate and close down freedom of expression of different views ,sound familiar , just as bad as those they appose and in my view a bigger danger to the country than the EDL

The EDL have a right to express their views as long as they aren't inciting racial hatred or being violent, as do those protesting against them. I'm not saying that the EDL shouldn't be allowed to protest and that's that, but that it's healthy that there are counter protests to such divisive views.

Nobody at the moment, which is a good thing. Nobody knows what could happen though, especially at the moment. Far right parties have become successful in a short space of time in Europe.

I could be wrong but I think that LePen in France is no more far right than UKIP. I've watched both BBC and C4 snippets about them recently. What's interesting is that their economic policies are pretty much identical to the left wing party (I forget its name) in France.
