(Such as when Thatcher brought in the poll tax. Major won an election after that but the party was never the same and once Labour got an electable leader they were booted out)
You mean Tony bLiar who won because he out Toried the Tories and won over the electorate because John Major was a complete embarrassment? Who never faced a credible opposition while he was in office?

The reason he faced no credible opposition was because the Tories fell apart after Thatcher had to step down, and she had to step down because she got cocky and succumbed to her own hubris. The poll tax encapsulated everything about her that people hated. Previously she'd been able to tow the line just enough, but this was so overt and so unfair that it finally brought her reign of terror crashing down around her

The "acceptable face" of the right was torn down and it took them till Cameron to get it back. But it is still a facade and eventually they will get cocky again and they'll go too far. Right now the austerity is hurting the weak and the powerless, which is why they can get away with it, but eventually they'll do something that treads on more toes, toes of more affluent people who like to vote for them because it's good for their interests. Once that happens, and it will happen in time, Labour have to be ready with an electable leader. Let's hope they have one

Yes but while being electable is the ultimate end game it shouldn't mean they have to sacrifice all principles. I'd argue they have an electable leader under Corbyn if the Blairite snakes would only get behind him. As it is most of the Labour party would probably be more at home within the Conservative party. The far right is on the rise because all there is to stand against it right now is this putrid little central ground which stands for nothing other then short term personal gain.

The right are winning at the moment, you need only look at both the US and UK governments for proof of that

I think the left have been complicit in their own destruction to be fair, with things like PC culture and SJW's stoking a fire under the right and also putting more moderate people off left values

At this moment in time, the right has the ear of the swing voter and until the left can win him/her back, they'll continue to flail in the wilderness

The right just play the game better, where as the left honestly believe they can change the game all together. Maybe they eventually can but it will take years to happen, and in the meantime the right will continue to the rule the roost

As someone who is more left leaning, my only hope is that the Tories will get too comfortable and cocky, and will do something so vulgar that it'll begin their eventual unravelling (Such as when Thatcher brought in the poll tax. Major won an election after that but the party was never the same and once Labour got an electable leader they were booted out)

The sad thing is a lot of the most vulnerable will have to suffer whilst the left gets it's act together, be it the sick and poor in the UK or minorities in the US

A very depressing few years ahead if you lean to the left, the right are in control

I agree with most of that Mikey, however what concerns me at the present on both sides of the pond, is the way the far right are trying to ride roughshod over the democratic process.

Over here we've had the Breixteers shouting about the "will of the People" and the insistence that the democracy is upheld, whilst on the next breath calling for a circumventing of the Parliamentary democracy and the process that must therefore be followed, labelling the judges in the court case "The enemy of the people" for upholding said democratic process, and then today intimating that the upper House will face closure if they don't pass the bill as it stands.

Then you've got Trump slating the judges that dare to challenge his ill conceived piece of political grandstanding and stomping his feet because he thinks he should be able to override the democratic process over there.

It's borderline fascism, and extremely worrying where we are heading here.

It's fascism in words, but no matter how much Trump stamps his feet, he's not going to circumnavigate the judiciary. I feel like people are paying way too much heed to Trump's bluster and not to what he can realistically achieve. General grasp of fascism seems almost willfully loose these days

He can circumvent the judiciary if he infiltrates the Supreme court with those of his own choosing though.

There's umpteen different definitions of fascism btw, but Roosevelt about nails if for me "The first truth is that the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself. That, in its essence, is fascism — ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or by any other controlling private power"

Using that criteria, there's a strong case to be made that the US has been a fascist state long before Trump got into office. He's a bit more open about it, but it would take something truly amazing and improbable to dismantle the checks and balances put in place to prevent the sort of tyranny he's being accused of. To call him a fascist is an insult to people who have lived through actual fascist regimes.

I hate selective editing, as you omitted the previous sentence, which is key;

the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerate the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than their democratic state itself

The US system makes it virtually impossible for dictatorial rule, which is why Trump is trying his utmost to try and discredit the judiciary, his aims are obvious, whether he makes any real headway towards them is another matter, but he's certainly going to try.

I never called him a fascist btw. What his is, is a racist, sexist, hate mongering, narcissistic, imbecile :)
