The Defence.......

Kenny is absolute woefull. Hibberts grand son!
Kenny is a better defender than Coleman and is comfortable on the ball with the pitch in front of him. He's only 5'8" which is tiny for a central defender, but to counter this he has a great spring on him and is actually very good in the air for his size.

Has played CB many times for the U23s, and latterly has played on the right of a back 3 for England u21s and looked very good there too.

He is definitely not the answer to our defensive problems, but to call him woeful shows you know nothing about football mate.

It's an understatement to say we have a massive problem with our central defence at the moment. Firstly, we only have 3, and the best of those (and the only one comfortable playing a higher than usual line) is injured and has missed most of pre season. The two fit players have proved themselves to be unsuitable to the style Silva is looking to play. Even if we bring in 1, or even 2 new CBs before the window shuts, it's unlikely they will be ready to start the season, so it looks as though we'll be going into the Wolves game with Keane and Jags.

Is it a bigger risk to play Kenny?. I really don't know. Feeney could have been a possibility too but I'm not sure on his fitness either.

Luckily we have a relatively easy start to the season. We just have to hope our attack can score more than our defence concedes. If we fail to bring any new centre back in, then I would say that we then need to seriously look at the options of Kenny and Feeney as an alternative. God help us.

Don't think so because richarlison has been quality so far and already looks one of our best players

If it was a choice between richarlisonor a cb that's different but well sign both anyway

Agree we will sign both before the end of the window. I like the fact that with Richarlison we signed a quick, skillful and direct player, something we have been missing for too long now.
We might still end up signing Mina who has been slow to make up his mind, and us not signing a CB yet might mean M&M think we are still in with a shout.
Mina AND Rojo would be excellent business.

It's been a worry for some time for me. Since the final Martinez season (and prior if I'm honest). Our defensive purchases have been almightly odd since that summer. Koeman espoused an aggressive pressing game, yet proceeded to procure (with Walsh) slow lumbering centre backs who aren't great on the ball. Utterly failed to bring in adequate full back cover either.

For successive seasons we've brought in more players in offensive positions, many who are utter crud. So we still find ourselves buying for further up the pitch whilst still neglecting defence.

And?

And what Dave?

If you think my post needs explaining I pity you.
Richarlison wasn't the alternative attacker to lead the line we need now. There's no contradiction in me saying we need CBs and attacking alternatives. LW was a vanity purchase at this stage.

aye, and that ever since we've employed a DoF.

I've been saying it for a while, and your point has made it more clearer than ever: a Director of Football in charge of recruitment can be counter-productive, and has been for us so far. Moyes didn't need one.

Brands will fail if he doesn't secure a quality CB. If this season also fails we should ditch the DoF grand idea and go back to the manager deciding recruitment, supported by a team of scouts.

Let me remind you of what you said in your post
Buying a LW for £40M in a window like this when defence needed sorting badly will go down as one of the worst decisions in years if we dont do a tidy bit of business in the coming says.
The day before you posted in the transfer thread that buying a striker was more important than buying a central defender. But buying a left winger, who happens IMO to be our best player by an absolute mile, is one of the worst decisions in years.

I said it can be argued it's our most crucial requirement (an attacker who leads the line...not a wide player). I never once stated CB wasn't a fundamental problem needing to be solved.

As said: no contradiction in what I've stated in the last 48 hours.

No. But you did say that getting a striker in was more important than getting a defender. Then the following day you say that bringing in a left sided forward, who I am certain can also play centrally, ahead of a defender, is potentially the worst decision in years.

If that isn't a contradiction I don't know what is.:)

Wide players aren't attackers who lead the line. It's as simple as that.

OK Dave

I'll leave you with that straw you're clutching on to.

As an aside, before this season is out, I wouldn't be surprised if you saw Richarlison leading our lines in quite a few of our games.
