One way to look at it I suppose. Lovely place Barbados.

But hard to justify it when everybody else on the planet is criticised for doing exactly the same thing.

It's like why he was able to have his loved one around him in hospital when hundreds of thousands others have had that denied to them
Agree with your last sentence.

If the guy wanted to go to Barbados during the pandemic lets not vilify him or his family for doing it.
Would rather die at 100 years of age having just been to Barbados than sit at home for the reminder of my life and die at 101.

Tory shill. Used to distract from the horror show they’ve created throughout this pandemic.

Allowing his family in while he was dying sets a dangerous precedent, just like Cummins.

So for all the good he did, (why an old man needs to raise money for the NHS instead of the government being held to account for a decade of underfunding) his family’s actions in taking him away and getting special dispensation leaves a sour taste.

RIP

And keep infecting everyone? Who gives a toss if he wanted to go to Barbados, youre not just risking your own life, its everyone.

Simple fact that world should have shut down international holiday travel straight away, and quarantined anyone needing to travel until this thing got sorted.

I agree with your last bit.

But you can't say good on yer Tom, fill yer boots lad, at the same time as hauling everyone else over the coals for doing exactly the same thing.

He must be a Liverpool fan.

Watching Jeremy Vine now. The whole thing is almost cult like.

He was a nice old guy and it's sad he has died. But the reaction to his death, just like the reaction to him walking around his front yard each day, is quite simply mind boggling.

It's getting all too much now. Let's face it what he did was nothing special apart from going for a small walk each day. That or sit catatonic in a day chair - I know which one I'd choose. That's not to belittle what come from his efforts but that was just because it became like the 'sports relief' of the pandemic and once pushed by the media everyone donated just as a done thing.

You look how much effort Speedo Mick puts in to raising money for charity, cap in hand to get the donations and the daily stress he puts on his body to do so. Yet he'll probably barely get a mention on the local news when he passes.

I salute what Capt. Tom did and I hope he finds eternal peace, but all this coverage and a national clap for a man who lived a long and happy life? Not for me, I'd rather we clapped in support of the victims who didn't get to half his age and the families left devastated in its wake.

WHY ARE THEY MENTIONING THE WAR

Its not done yet. Dont be surprised if we hear calls for a statue, empty plinth at Trafalgar Square comes to mind.
As for the war, its the narrative they live for. If he wasn't a vet of WW2 would he get the attention he did?
He did something worthwhile, but noting that hasn't been done before. And if you want to talk about inspirational, then his efforts pale in comparison to the medical professionals who have and continue to drag themselves through a version of hell no one should suffer for nothing more than a polite round of applause.

My mother lost her [Poor language removed] when she heard the family were allowed to by his side, she has lost two very dear friends from COVID, one equally as important to dear Old Tom, through his his work life, neither was afforded family by their sides... She has since found out about Barbados, her Christmas was wrecked like most others.

Truest example of the elitist attitude that runs through this country.

No clap from me, not going to cheapen myself to a Boris gag, I shall remember Tom in my own way.

If Boris wants to promote a legacy I would suggest free NHS parking for staff patients and their visitors.

The whole 'raise the spirits of the nation' narrative is vile PR too. As if it raised anyone's spirts. Stuck at home, NHS overran, people dying....someone going for a walk.

He just became a PR puppet which ticked nearly patriotic PR Tory box. Once Vera Lynn pegged it, it got even worse.

We had a local bus route and a lake named after him (i don't think he has ever been where I live). Maddening.

Poor guy probably died as a result. Not even his fault.
