Call me insensitive.. but does anyone else think all of the coverage for 'Captain Tom' is a bit over the top? you'd almost think it was the queen or the pope that's died..

Channel 4 did a nice little piece on him last night and then moved on to other important news. It even mentioned the 'controversial' Barbados thing which was brave of them to do, certainly the most balanced coverage of it.

The BBC and ITV are still running dedicated tribute programmes on him this morning..
Watching Jeremy Vine now. The whole thing is almost cult like.

He was a nice old guy and it's sad he has died. But the reaction to his death, just like the reaction to him walking around his front yard each day, is quite simply mind boggling.

Oh I got no idea about that soz. How in the hell did he catch it? I thought he’d be the first person protected from it.
They aren't saying. But apparently he wasn't able to have the vaccine, plus the family took him on holiday to Barbados over xmas

Now for me, taking a 100 yo man on a 10 flight at the height of a global pandemic, is not the cleverest thing in the world to do

He raised a staggering amount for the NHS primarily through his 'story' going viral, which is no slight on the guy whatsoever, but he's being held up as almost some kind of Jesus 'beacon of hope' figure.

It's ultimately him I actually really feel for most of all. I was speaking to the missus about this last night that, whilst it's clear that he seemed happy enough that his actions were making a difference, you got the distinct sense that his family where more than willing to wheel him out in public and in front of the cameras at every given opportunity and I never got the sense that he was fully on-board or even aware with it all given his declining age. It all cumulated into him being whisked off to Barbados by said family and contracting Covid himself soon after, cruelly (and ironically) killing him.

Michael Ball can get to f as well. Blubbing away on tele during every interview now.. he'll just be loving the publicity him. :coffee:

100 years of age and his last holiday was Barbados a few weeks ago.
Perfect way to bow out.
One way to look at it I suppose. Lovely place Barbados.

But hard to justify it when everybody else on the planet is criticised for doing exactly the same thing.

It's like why he was able to have his loved one around him in hospital when hundreds of thousands others have had that denied to them
