He was claiming benefits for a back problem and played a mini game at Wembley Everton v Liverpool legends.Apparently he got grassed on by a blue and lost his benefits.He then kicked off in his newspaper column.Sorry for his family,that's about it.

So the story goes. I am sure I am not the only one to have heard stories from those days....and dead men cant sue.

....I recall Tommy Smith was ‘the Aintree Iron’ in the Scaffold song. I also remember him trying to kick Duncan McKenzie in the ‘Clive Thomas’ semi final. To be fair he scored a massive and very unlikely goal in a European Cup Final.

I’m fortunate enough to have won the Echo Cup as a youngster (high profile school football competition in Liverpool) and Tommy Smith presented us with the trophy.
