....I recall Tommy Smith was ‘the Aintree Iron’ in the Scaffold song. I also remember him trying to kick Duncan McKenzie in the ‘Clive Thomas’ semi final. To be fair he scored a massive and very unlikely goal in a European Cup Final.

I’m fortunate enough to have won the Echo Cup as a youngster (high profile school football competition in Liverpool) and Tommy Smith presented us with the trophy.

I remember McKenzie megging him in that game too

It's often said if you want to know anything about the RS ask an Evertonian (and vice versa of course), but as I started following the Blues the rise of the rats began with Smith as the bogey man. Now he, to me at least, was a legend for them and right up to him playing his last game for them was a stalwart and I respect him for that. Not the most skilful of players but played with his heart on his sleeve. Their Mike Lyons.

Tommy Smith. Meh. Used to listen to his phone in in the 90s. Never liked him. For sure he won't get the same respect at death from football fans as Ronnie Moran did or what Ian St John will.

He's like an old version of Aldridge, really

Its an interesting observation. Football was different back then, no doubt, but even so, some players will always accord more respect from football fans of other clubs than others.

Leeds were probably the most disliked team from that era; Billy Bremner was despised, Norman Hunter, Giles, Charlton, not so much. Same with the RS. Players like Toshack, Jones, Clemence, no problem with.

....really, i’d be very interested in that. Scored 5 there in an English Schools Trophy game, loved that pitch felt you couldn’t miss such was the set-up. Houses there now sadly, but Walton Hall Avenue is a fine home for Liverpool Schools.

I played on the pitch running down with the fence at bottom that was the under 11 pitch it was like a big most of the time, used to finish early and then watch the under 14s in awe.

....I know exactly which pitch you mean, Billy. Scored one there in a Cup final win when I was in the juniors but that was probably in the late 1960s.
