I’m just saying stuff to myself right now but it’s such a stark reality when the argument gets embroiled in the semantics of a particular phrase rather than the underlying issue that the phrase is addressing.

To be more offended by a turn of phrase and its misinterpretation rather than a clear issue is saddening.

Forget about the historical origins of the word? Just because the ignorant are using the term incorrectly does not mean the original mean and context is lost.

Google the phrase ‘white privilege meaning’ and you will be hard pressed to find a respectable source that uses it in the way you do. You’ll find that it is overwhelmingly being used in the correct way.

So, in that respect, do you think you might be wrong?

"inherent advantages possessed by a white person on the basis of their race in a society characterized by racial inequality and injustice"

It's a racist term mate - what inherent advantage does a white person have living in Asia for example?

There are more poor white folk than wealthy in the UK as an example - where are the inherent racial advantages there?

People can spin it how they want its a term that claims a white person has a racial advantage in the world over everyone else which is politically incorrect to use in a modern multi cultural society.

‘On the basis of their race in *a* society’

Not *every* society. It doesn’t say the whole world. Nor does it exclude all other privileges

You are either being deliberately obtuse now or just plain ignorant. I’m telling you that you are misunderstanding the phrase. Or just unaccepting of the premise.

The term, when used correctly, applies to the privilege of being white in society that has inherent biases toward white people, such as the UK and the US.

It doesn’t apply to societies that do not have those inherent biases toward white people.

It doesn’t ignore other privileges such as class or gender or sexuality. It isn’t mutually exclusive.

It doesn’t say all white people are privileged. It says that if you are white in a society that has inherent biases toward white people then all else being equal there is a benefit to your ‘whiteness’.

Either you are misinterpreting the phrase or you don’t believe that things like institutionalised racism exists in places like the U.K. Either way, evidence would suggest you are wrong.

Its a means of presenting an argument where none should exist.

Sad to see but unfortunately prevelant amongst a certain political section

But this is my point - you dare go to Nigeria and say they have "Black Privilege" over you or to China and claim you're victim of "Asian privilege" and you'll be rightfully kicked in the nads and probably get your collar felt.

It's a term that has no place in modern day society.

We are better than this man.

Do you believe that institutional racism exists in the U.K.? Simple yes or no answer will suffice.

In 2021? Probably not.

Do I think racism exists in the UK - 100%

Do I think racism exists everywhere in the world - 100%

Using inflammatory language and sweeping generalisation statements does nothing but further divide people.

We need to be coming together as a society not pushing one another further away.

We Centrists largely acknowledge this whereas large elements of the Left and Right both promote their own versions of bigotry and racism / anti semitism to be able to see the woods from the trees.

If you do not believe institutionalised racism exists in the U.K. then I’m just going to stop here thanks.

er - Han Chinese have an awful lot of privilege over there, just look at what is happening in Tibet and Xinjiang

“It’s racist to actually suggest everyone who’s white somehow is riddled with privilege.”

Thats spot on that - not often I agree with a Tory but he's bang on.

Anyone who says that especially in a position of authority such as a teacher should face disciplinary action.
Why lad? How much racism have you received in your life? That comment by the scummy tory displays an arrogant misunderstanding of what the term means, and its not as you interpret it. Nobody is suggesting that.

But thats just your echo chamber opinion mate.

For a country to be institutionally racist you wouldn't have an Asian Mayor of the Capital and Largest City, multi millionaire BAME, Black Police Officers, Asian Doctors and Surgeons and higher ups in the NHS, BAME politicians etc.

You no doubt have pockets of racism i.e a racist head of police department in some area but thats not institutional racism on a nationwide level its just pockets of scumbag racists.

It’s nothing to do with an echo chamber. Having a discussion about white privilege is redundant if you don’t accept the premise of institutionalised racism. And the argument that *some* people of colour are successful as an argument against i institutionalised racism is flawed.

You only have to look at the upper echelons of society across lots of disciplines to see that inherent bias exist.

If you don’t accept that as a premise despite all evidence it’s not my job to educate you. I’d rather not waste the energy. You’ll believe what you believe. So I’m leaving it there.

But thats like saying how many Welsh or Scousers or Geordies or bi sexuals or whatever are in the upper echelons of society.

Of course the bulk of the top brass in the UK are typically white rich straight southern folk. But that in itself doesn't mean the UK is institutionally racist. 30-40+ years ago 100% it was but we've progressed massively since then but racism still goes on and the only way we solve that is by bringing people together - not using outdated terms and inflammatory language otherwise old wounds will never heal.
