Gets me down reading the replies from people that are already struggling financially that are gonna be even worse off later this year. Serfs should work more I guess is the general thought of the Tories.

Really disgusting that, but the problem is that your middle England voters don’t know or care about how the benefit system works.
When the pandemic hit I worked with a fair amount of people who’d never experienced the benefits system before and couldn’t believe what they were having to live on.

I sent a letter to my local Tory MP re the removal of the £20 from Universal Credit. I carefully explained that due to health reasons I am unable to work so rely on benefits. I am currently awaiting a transplant,to which there is no time scale. I pointed out that with food and energy prices rising the reduction will have an impact on my quality of life.
His reply was,to put it politely, insulting. He thought my wait for a transplant was far too long and that he would step in if I wanted him too!! He obviously has no idea how a transplant waiting list works.
He also stated that the average couple in Cheltenham would have to pay an extra £200 a year in tax to fund the £20 a week and he didn’t think that was fair due to rising food and energy costs!
Totally ignoring my statement on being unable to work,he then included the amazing news that there was a lot of help from the government for those who wanted to work.
He did offer to look into my position with the DSS,to ensure I am getting the correct benefits. I know that I am getting all I’m entitled to as I have applied for everything I can, pip, sickness element of uc,housing benefit etc.But I will send him my NI number just to see.
There’s often other odd things that can help. If your rent isn’t fully covered by your housing element in your UC google the name of your council and DHP form to apply for a top up. Should get it also if you aren’t already

TBF this is a consequence of offering support in this way (as monetary assistance) - the same problem exists with tax credits.

I’d much rather see government support exist in terms of housing / services (including transport) than just subsidising low wages directly.

For sure. I also noticed that a lot of places stopped doing zero hour contracts and had things like 7 hour contracts instead. If you’re claiming UC and working mad variable hours like that then it’s very hard to budget for things like your rent as you don’t know how much will be covered by your UC. Whole thing is a mess. Still probably a better system than tax credits mind you.

It’s a mess alright, one that’s been deliberately encouraged.

I can understand the need for wages to be kept low (given global competition) and if the government took care of needs (housing, power, probably transport ultimately) and made sure the jobs were secure (in terms of full time not zero or gig labour) then we as a country could probably do that (and at probably a lot less expense than the current insecure jobs / wage topups / Housing Benefit system costs).

Nice one. Let us know how you get on. At certain times of the year councils have more money in that pot than others. You can ask for a review if they knock you back but that’s fairly rare in my experience. It’s a temp thing but sounds ideal in your case. Not many people know about this.

Did he really say this?

Sarah Jones (Lab) asks about constituents being charged £23,000 to remove dangerous cladding who do not get government help because it is the wrong type of cladding.

Johnson says, if people do not need to remove that cladding, they will not get help. He says too many flats have been deemed unsafe.
