Yeah, Jack Straw was a authoritarian who helped, like a lot of New Labour's policies, for the place we have ended up in now

TBF a lot of their authoritarianism (as is the case with this lot) is much more for show than anything well thought out.

IPPs for example were a stupid idea brought about solely so they could pretend most people wouldn't get released a lot earlier than they would appear to when sentenced (and turned out to be illegal anyway) but it sounded hard and didn't cost much so they were in favour.

"Punishment for antisocial behaviour included in proposals that will also extend powers of stop and search".

Another policy that's been demonstrated, both here and in other nations, to not work. Dehumanising people even more is not going to reform them. Everything in this crime thingy has been tried before, just desperate lurching.

If they want to publicly shame someone for anti-social behaviour then there's plenty in the Cabinet who display that every day. I'm sure that adultery used to get you a spell in the stocks back in the day. And they used to hang traitors one way to get rid of Boris and chums.

To be fair, Patel would probably like to see police execution squads roaming the streets dispatching anyone she think looks dodgy.

@Bruce Wayne help settle an argument please, bloke I’m working with at moment isn’t the most welcoming to foreign friends shall we say, is it a legal requirement for a fleeing refugee to claim asylum in the first safe country they arrive at ? Eg, if they arrive in France first are they legally required to claim asylum in that country ?

possibly wrong thread to ask.

No, they can claim asylum anywhere they want.
