As much as it's showing them up as a complete shambles that masked it by being in power, from their perspective it's the right time to let it all out. All the attention is on Starmer's first few months in No 10 (and the drama unfolding in the US) and by the time the next election comes round nobody will be remembering that the Tories farted about for 6 months rudderless anyway. It makes sense for them to be circumspect and find the 'right' candidate now, otherwise it could be the case in 3 years their member-picked loon having to quit after some embarrassing moment and see them approach 2029 reminding the electorate of how chaotic they are.
As for their financial woes, maybe Sunak will bung them £20million from all the cash his position helped him grub if someone senior and dull agrees to take over as interim. Then he doesn't have to look like an idiot "leading" a party from a position he's already quit, with MPs both in front of and behind him having a pop at his record.
